Cameron records 10 blocks in 3-2 loss at SNU

BETHANY, Okla. – The Aggie volleyball team battled in their final non-conference game of the young 2018 season, but fell in five sets to Southern Nazarene on Tuesday night.

The loss to the Crimson Storm was CU's fourth five set defeat of the season and fifth match total that has gone to a fifth game. The Black and Gold hit just .158 as a team, while SNU attack at a .225 percentage. However, the Aggies won the battle at the net 10-3, but totaled just four service aces, compared to SNU's 9.

Paige Dixon led CU with 14 kills on a .355 attack percentage, as Brittany Lawson recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Katherine Manning and Bailee Smith combined for 43 assists and 20 digs out of the setter position, while defensively, Brittnee Altic had a team high 24 digs and Brandy Carr totaled six blocks.

After battling back and forth to start set one, SNU used a 6-0 to build up a 14-6 lead. They continued to build on their lead, extending it to 11 at 23-12, and despite a late 5-0 run by CU, the Crimson Storm closed out the set with a 25-18 win.

Cameron came out in set two and took an early 4-0 lead, but the home team bounced right back to even the match at 10. The two teams traded points, before SNU gained a five point advantage with a small run, giving them a 19-14 lead. The Aggies responded with a run of their own and tied the match at 22. Back and forth the lead went until CU took advantage of a pair of attack errors by SNU as Bristol Lewis capped off a three point run to win the set 30-28.

Set three was another tightly contested battle, with neither team taking more than a three point lead. It was a pair of CU kills by Dixon and Lewis that fueled a 4-0 run to end the set 26-24. Set four was similar to the third at the start, but a pair of late runs by SNU gave them the edge that led to the 25-16 win that evened up the match.

The final set was another dog fight at the beginning, with five tied through first half of the game. From there, Southern Nazarene took the momentum, going on a 9-2 run to close out the set 15-10 and win the match.

Cameron moves to 2-8 on the season, while SNU is now 4-5.

The Aggies will begin Lone Star Conference play this weekend, as they host West Texas A&M on Friday, Sep. 7 and Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, Sep. 8.
