LAWTON, Okla. -- The Cameron University volleyball team dropped their Lone Star Conference opener to West Texas A&M 3-1 on Friday night at the Aggie Gym.
The Aggies did a good job containing the WT offense, holding them to a .202 attack percentage with a season-best 12 total blocks. However, CU could not limit their own mistakes, hitting .141 on the attack with five blocking errors and seven ball handling errors as well.
Brandy Carr collected 17 points to lead the Black and Gold, as Division II's leader in total blocks addd seven to her season total while recording 11 kills as well.
Paige Dixon had a team-high 13 kills, while
Katherine Manning notched another double-double with 22 assists and 11 digs and
Brittnee Altic continued her strong senior campaign with 23 digs.
The match started out with a battle in set one, with both teams trading blows in the form of small rallies to match the other. Down 23-22, Cameron used a 4-1 stretch fueled by kills from Dixon,
Brittany Lawson, and
Ashleigh McFatridge to steal the 26-24 set win.
Set two was similar to the first, with the two teams going back and forth until late in the set the Lady Buffs used a 5-0 run to take a 22-16 lead. After a pair of CU points, WT finised off the set with three straight points to win 25-18 and even up the match.
In the third set, Cameron looked to be gaining momentum to take a 2-1 lead in the match, taking an 18-13 lead midway through the set. That's when West Texas went on a 12-1 run to finish off the set 25-19.
WT controlled set four from the start, taking an early 12-5 lead and then extending it to 19-10 with a 7-2 stretch. CU got to within five on a kill from Dixon that set the score at 19-14, but the Lady Buffs bounced right back with a 6-1 run to take the 25-16 win.
Cameron is now 2-9 on the season and 0-1 in LSC play, while WT moves to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in league contests.
The Aggies will host Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at 2 p.m. to close out the weekend.
