LAWTON, Okla. – A hot start and stellar defense, including 19 steals, helped lift the Cameron men to their first Lone Star Conference win of the season, an 82 -70 victory over Western New Mexico.

In the first half, Cameron University started out with a 10-4 run, capitalizing on Mustang turnovers and holding the edge on the glass. WNMU answered with a 14-9 run of their own to tie the contest up with six minutes left in the half. From that mark on, Cameron used a 14-9 stretch to close out the half leading by six. Â

Cameron was able to grab 24 rebounds in the first half while creating sixteen turnovers. They scored 17 of their 32 first half points off Mustang turnovers and held the lead for 18-of-the-20 minutes.

The leading scorer for the Aggies at halftime was Zachary Dumas who poured in nine points, with two rebounds.

Brock Schreiner, a freshman guard from Choctaw, Okla. got his second career start tonight and earned his playing time on the defensive end by collecting four steals. Offensively, Schreiner enjoyed a few hard drives to the basket producing six points.

The Aggies started the second half off with a 6-0 run that prompted a Western New Mexico timeout to try to stop the bleeding. That timeout sparked a 5-0 run by Western New Mexico featuring two Aggie turnovers which got Cameron head man
Andrew Brown off his seat for a timeout of his own.

That timeout ignited a 13-7 Cameron run, which pushed the Aggie lead to 11 points with as many minutes left. At the five-minute mark, CU clung to an 11 point lead and was on the verge their first conference win of the season.

The Black and Gold was able to close out their first conference win behind a 15 point effort by
Tyus Momoh, who also got eight rebounds, and came away with five steals. Schreiner finished with a career-best 14 points, same as
Jalen Nicholas, who added 11 rebounds for a double-double.
Jordan Lewis was the fourth Aggie in double-figures, scoring 12 points, eight of which came from the foul line.

Cameron saw four players get into double figures, and won the rebounding battle 38-33. The real difference came on the defensive end, where Cameron forced 29 turnovers, 19 of which coming directly from Aggie steals.

With the win, CU moves to 5-10 on the season with a 1-4 conference mark. They will turn around and host the high-scoring UT Permian Basin Falcons on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 4 p.m.
