Cameron opens 2019 with pair of LSC battles

LAWTON, Okla. -- Cameron men's basketball opens up 2019 with a pair of Lone Star Conference battles against Tarleton State on Thursday and Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday.

Starting 5: 
1. The Aggies excel at getting to the free throw line, ranking first in the nation and the Lone Star Conference in free throws attempted (333) and made (247).
2. Junior guard Jordan Lewis has averaged 12.8 points during CU's last four games, including a career-high 21 point outing against UAFS.
3. Senior Josh Hawley leads the LSC in scoring (17.5), rebounding (10.4), and double-doubles (6).
4. Texas A&M-Commerce has five players averaging in double-figures, with senior Reggie Reid leading the way with 15.9 points per game.

About the Aggies: 
Cameron went 4-8 during the first half of the season, while falling both of their early LSC contests against West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico. Most recently, they ended 2018 with a 69-62 loss at Dallas Baptist, shooting a season low 30.9 percent from the field and going 5-26 from three-point range. Lewis led the team with 14 points, going 5-9 from the floor, while Jalen Nicholas added a 12 point, 10 rebound double-double. 

The Aggies are scoring 78.7 points per game while shooting just over 41 percent from the floor and 36 percent from the perimeter. They also lead the LSC with a 74.2 free throw percentage to go along with their nation leading free throws made and attempted. They also average 36.1 rebounds and 12.3 assists while turning the ball over just 12.4 times per game. Defensively, CU's opponents are scoring 80.5 points per outing, while shooting 45.8 percent from the floor and 35.5 percent from long range. The Black and Gold also leads the LSC in total steals (105) and steals per game (8.8).

Senior Zach Dumas is second in the conference with a 17.3 scoring average, while leading the LSC and ranking in the top-15 nationally in free throws made and attempted (71-92). He is also second in the league with 24 total steals, as Tyus Momoh is fourth with 23 steals. Momoh ranks second on the squad with 12.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while dishing out a team-best 3.8 assists per outing. Johann Tate is also scoring in double-digits with 11.3 points per game, while shooting 37.7 percent from the perimeter and 86.5 percent from the foul line. 

Scouting the Texans: 
Tarleton State begins the new year with a 10-2 overall record and a 1-1 LSC mark. They are currently on a four game win streak after beating Wiley 94-79 on Dec. 29. Three Texans scored in over 20 points with Hawley leading the way with 23 points and Corinthian Ramsey and Randall Broddie each chipping in 20. 

Tarleton State averages 78.2 points per game with a 9.1 scoring margin over their opposition. They are shooting 49.5 percent from the field, 40.7 percent from three, and 74.1 percent from the charity stripe. Hawley is averaging a double-double with 17.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per outing while shooting 62.1 percent from the field while going 21-44 from the perimeter. Ramsey averages 14.1 points and 4.1 assists, while Broddie scores 11.5 points per game while shooting at a 48 percent clip. 

The Series Against TSU: 
Tarleton State leads the all-time series 29-9, winning eight of the last 10 contests. Cameron's only wins in the last five seasons have come in the Aggie Gym. Their last meeting was on Mar. 2, 2018 in the first round of the LSC Tournament. The Texans won 63-49 behind 20 points from Ramsey and 16 rebounds from Hawley. Cameron shot just 25.8 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from three point range in the loss; Momoh led the team with 11 points, while Nicholas grabbed 11 rebounds. 

Scouting the Lions: 
Texas A&M-Commerce also begins the second half of the season with a 10-2 record, with a pair of wins in their first two league contests against Angelo State and Texas A&M-Commerce. They are currently on a five game win streak, taking down Texas A&M-International in their last game on Sunday. The Lions scored 50 points in the second half, shooting over 54 percent from the floor for the game. Tyree Robinson led the way with 23 points, while four others scored in double-digits. 

TAMUC is outscoring their opposition by 12.3 points, while averaging 82.6 points and shooting 49.9 percent from the floor and 35.9 percent from the perimeter. They also lead the LSC with 16.1 assists per game and average 6.8 steals and 4.0 blocks on the defensive end. Reid not only leads the squad in scoring, but also averages 5.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 2.0 steals per outing. Robinson ranks second nationally with a 72.9 field goal percentage while averaging 13 points a game. 

The Series Against TAMUC: 
The Lions own a 31-23 record over the Aggies, with a 9-6 record at the Aggie Gym. They have also won seven of the last 10 meetings, including a 54-52 win over CU in the first round of the LSC Tournament back in 2017. Last season the two teams split the season series, with each team winning on the road. Last time out, the Aggies shot 52.5 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three in an 84-62 win. Nicholas scored a career-high 17 points, while Momoh added a 15 point, 12 rebound double-double in the victory.

Cameron will continue their Lone Star Conference home stand next week as they host Western New Mexico on Thursday, Jan. 10 and then UT Permian Basin on Saturday, Jan. 12.
