KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Cameron men's basketball team struggled on the offensive side of the ball Saturday afternoon, losing 70-44 at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
The Aggies came out cold against the streaking Javelinas, shooting just 17.1 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play. They went 0-8 from three and 4-10 from the foul line as the home team led by 19, 35-16 at the break.
Jalen Nicholas and
Chris Royal each had four points to lead CU at the half.
Texas A&M-Kingsville did not shoot lights out in the first half, but were 10-23 from the field and 4-9 from three point range. They also made 11 of their 14 free throw attempts and defensively totaled five blocks and three steals. Rashon Thomas led them with 10 points at the break, while Daniel Severo added seven in just nine minutes played.
Cameron fared better shooting the ball in the second half, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Javelinas cruised to a 70-44 victory, their sixth straight win. CU shot 39.1 percent in the second half, going 2-9 from three and 8-11 from the foul line. Their opposition shot 41.4 percent in the final frame, going 5-12 from long range and 6-11 from the charity stripe.
Nicholas led the Black and Gold with a game-high 14 points. The redshirt-junior shot 5-12 from the floor and was 4-4 from the free throw line; he also led CU with six rebounds.
Tyus Momoh and
Zach Dumas each chipped in seven points in the loss.
Severo and Darius Mickens, who each had 11 points, led the Javelinas offensively. Thomas finished with 10 points and Alex Mills added nine; all but two of the 13 players that stepped onto the court for TAMUK scored.
Cameron is now 7-12 on the season and 3-6 in league play, while the Javelinas improve to 10-7 overall and 6-3 against LSC opponents.
The Aggies will return home for a pair of conference rematches next week, as they host Eastern New Mexico on Thursday, Jan. 31 and West Texas A&M on Saturday, Feb. 2.
