ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Cameron women's tennis team wrapped up their weekend of Division I exhibitions in New Mexico on Sunday, falling 6-1 to former Lone Star Conference member Abilene Christian.
In doubles, CU fell behind early with
Sara Petric and
Rebeka Velasova losing 6-0 in the No. 2 spot and
Sarah Frendo and
Pilar Jaurena losing at No. 3 6-3.
Alisa Savina and
Zhenia Shviadok took their match at No. 1 to the brink, forcing their opponents from ACU to win 7-4 in the tiebreak to take the match 7-6.
Cameron's one point of the match came at No. 1, as Shviadok came back after falling 6-0 in the first set to force a tiebreak with a 7-5 win in set two. The senior then won 10-4 in the extra set to give CU the point.
Velasova also had a strong showing against her ACU opponent at No. 3. She won set one by a score of 6-3 and then fell in the second by the same score. The two players then went back and forth until Nini Memishishi of the Wildcats went ahead and won the tiebreak 10-8.
The Aggies went 0-3 in their trio of exhibitions this weekend, falling to UT San Antonio on Friday, New Mexico on Saturday, and then ACU on Sunday.
Cameron's spring season will officially begin on Friday, Dec. 1 as they take on Drury in Springfield, Mo. At 8 p.m. They will then face Washburn the next day at 1 p.m.
