SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Cameron women's tennis team officially began their spring season this weekend, losing to both Drury and Washburn, 5-3 and 7-0.
Against the Panther on Friday, Cameron got a pair of singles wins in the No. 1 and No. 5 spots as
Sarah Frendo won 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 andÂ
Melany Opolz won 6-3, 9-2. The Aggies third point came in the six spot with a win by default. Two of CU's losses came in three sets as
Rebeka Velasova lost 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 and
Alisa Savina Fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, only two matches were played with Dury winning the No. 1 doubles match 6-3 and the No. 2 match 6-1.
The Aggies failed to get a point against Washburn on Saturday, losing 7-0. The lone singles match that went to three sets was at No. 6, where
Pilar Jaurena lost 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (6).
Cameron's No. 2 doubles pairing of Savina and Frendo came away with a 6-4 win in their match, but due to the new rule that doubles count as one point, CU's losses in the other two doubles pairings led to the 1-0 score.
The No. 22 ranked Aggies are now 0-2 on the season and will not play again until the take on Division I UT Arlington on Feb. 14 and then Seward County CC on Feb. 15 for their home opener.
