Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

McNair's 17 points not enough in loss to Lions

LAWTON, Okla.- The Cameron Aggie women's basketball team could not get past the pressing Texas A&M Commerce Lions on Saturday afternoon, falling 86-67.

In the first quarter, the Aggies had to maneuver through a full-court press for the second straight game. The suffocating Lions defense, which only allows 60 points per game held the Aggies to 13 points in the first frame of action and created six turnovers in the quarter. The Aggies got in foul trouble early, committing five fouls in the first allowing Texas A&M Commerce to earn seven points at the line.

Texas A&M Commerce went on a 9-5 run to start the second quarter. In that stretch, the Aggies went 1-for-5 from the floor, with a turnover. Following the media timeout, Cameron still struggled against the full-court pressure, resulting in another run favoring the Lions, this time an 11-9 scoring stretch. Cameron lost the ball three times by way of the heavy pressure from the Lions.

The Lions took a ten point lead into the break in large part due to their 11 forced turnovers, and a 29-16 edge on the glass. The streaky Aggies struggled from deep stroking the trey ball at just a 26 percent clip in the first half, down from their 36 percent season average from beyond the arc.

In the third quarter, the Lions were able to enjoy their largest lead of the game, at one point seeing their lead swell to 24 during the third quarter. The Lions went on a blistering 12-6 run to end the third quarter, outscoring the Aggies 24-10 in the frame, the largest differential of the contest.

Despite being down 24 to start the fourth quarter, the Aggies did not go away. By the under five timeout, Cameron pulled within 17 getting some momentum on their side as they were able to win the frame 30-25, the only quarter Cameron was able to pull out. CU cut the Lions lead down to twelve with under two minutes to play but could not draw any closer than that.

The defensive switch by Aggie head coach Emma Andrews, deciding to fight fire-with-fire and run a full-court press of her own allowed Cameron to wear down Texas A&M Commerce and create nine second-half turnovers.

In that fourth quarter, Elgin, Okla. native Ava Battese drilled a three-pointer totaling a pair for the game and pulling her within three of tying the Cameron record for threes made in a career.

Redshirt senior Parfitt McNair from Manhattan, Kan.was tonight's leading scorer, posting 17 points on 54 percent shooting from the floor, along with a team-high eight rebounds and a pair of assists in 26 minutes.

Next up for the Aggies, they continue their homestand at the Aggie gym Thursday, Jan. 10 with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m..
