LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron volleyball team could not slow down the powerful offense over A&M-Commerce on Friday night, falling to the Lions 3-0.
The Aggies allowed the Lions, who are receiving votes in the latest AVCA Top-25 poll, to hit .438 on the attack, while the Black and Gold themselves hit just .177 with 33 kills. CU was also outmatched at the net and the service line, as A&M-Commerce recorded 10 total blocks and eight aces, compared to Cameron's three blocks and one ace.
One bright spot for CU was
Walia Franklin, who tallied 10 kills and two blocks while hitting .308 on the attack. Additionally,
Shantalle Demirjian and
Riana Blount added six kills each and
Sarah Wright and
Arianna Navarrete both had five kills.
Katherine Manning had a team-high 16 assists and Wright led squad with nine digs.
A&M-Commerce opened up the first set with a 7-3 lead and extended that to 13-5 thanks to a 6-1 run. A few points later, they added a 7-1 stretch to bring their advantage to 21-9. The Lions hit over .500 in the first set and used that to secure a 25-14 win.
In the second set, the Aggies hung with their opponent throughout, not letting them go ahead by more than three until a 4-1 run gave A&M-C a 15-11 lead mid-way through the frame. The two teams went back and forth until another 4-1 stretch by the Lions secured their 25-19 set victory.
Set three started similar to the first, with A&M-Commerce opening up the frame with a 7-3 advantage. The extended that advantage to 19-9 thanks to a stretch of seven straight. Cameron would not go away quietly, using a 6-0 run of their own to get back to within six of their foe from Commerce. A 3-2 swing in favor of CU set the score at 24-19, but the Lions finished things off on a Syndey Anderson kill to claim the set 25-19 and the match.
Cameron lost their sixth straight Lone Star Conference match on Friday night and are 5-11 overall this season. They are now 1-4 against their division and will face another division opponent on Saturday, hosting UT Tyler for a 2 p.m. start.
