Aggies drop three set match to NWOSU

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron volleyball team hosted Northwestern Oklahoma State for their annual "Dig Pink" match on Tuesday night, but the outcome did not go the way of the Aggies as they fell 3-0.

Box Score (PDF)

The Aggies hit just .113 in the match with 37 kills in three sets. They also totaled just five blocks and two service aces, compared to NWOSU's 10 total blocks and seven aces. Their opponent also hit .330 on the attack with 36 kills.

Walia Franklin had 10 kills to lead the Black and Gold and hit .368 on the attack. Sarah Wright, Shantalle Demirjian, and Arianna Navarrete each added seven kills, but all hit under .150 for the match. Desiree Marmolejo and Katherine Manning combined for 35 assists, while Peyton Little had a team-high 12 digs and Wright added 11. Additionally, Demirjian and Caitlyn Henderson each had three total blocks, while freshman Kendyl Payne had two blocks in just one set played.

The first set was the closet of the match. The two teams were back and forth until NWOSU took a late 23-19 lead thanks to a 3-0 run. Cameron answered with four straight points to tie the frame at 23, before the Rangers ended the frame on a pair of kills by Kaydee Honeycutt and Kate Deterding.

Cameron held tight early in the second set, but a 10-1 stretch by Northwestern put them ahead 14-7. A few points later, they added to their lead with five straight points and then closed out the frame on a 6-1 rally to win 25-14.

NWOSU carried that momentum into the third set and opened up the frame on a 10-3 run and then extended their lead to 11 (15-4) a few plays later. The Aggies fought back to get tithing seven at 17-10, but the damage had been done as the Rangers won the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

The Aggies are now 5-12 with the loss and will look to bounce back this weekend against a pair of Lone Star Conference opponents. CU will travel to Kingsville, Texas on Friday, Oct. 18, to face off against the Javelinas before traveling to Texas A&M International on Saturday, Oct. 19.
