LAREDO, Texas – Despite winning the first set in a 30-28 battle, the Aggie volleyball team fell at Texas A&M International on Saturday, 3-1.
Cameron started out the match strong, hitting .136 with 13 kills, two aces, and four blocks in the first set, however they averaged an .084 attack percentage and had three aces and six blocks in the final three sets. CU finished with a respectable 10.0 total blocks and five aces, but hit just .101 with 36 kills on the attack.
Sarah Wright led the Black and Gold with 11 kills, but had seven errors, giving her a .101 hitting percentage.
Arianna Navarrete added eight kills while
Riana Blount chipped in seven.
Desiree Marmolejo recorded her third double-double of the season with 21 assists and a team-best 17 digs, while
Peyton Little added 15 digs and
Kirsten Evans and
Katherine Manning each had 11; Manning also had 12 assists. CU got three blocks performances from Blount,
Kendyl Payne, and
Caitlyn Henderson.
The opening set started out back and forth until Cameron used four straight points to take a small 13-8 lead. The Dustdevils answered with a 5-1 stretch to get back to within one point, and CU responded with a late 4-1 rally to reach set-point at 24-20. TAMIU came back with four in a row of their own to tie the set and then after trading scores back and forth, a pair of errors by their opponent gave the Aggies the 30-28 win.
Despite taking an early 5-1 lead in the second, Cameron fell behind quickly as International used runs of four and six straight points to take a 12-8 advantage. CU slowly chipped away at the lead and got to within two at 19-17, but the Dustdevils closed out the set on a 6-1 stretch to win 25-18.
In the third, Cameron once again started the set with the lead, but a 13-1 stretch for Texas A&M International put them way up at 17-8 halfway through the frame. The Aggies got back to within four at 20-16, but the damage had been done as the home team closed out the set with four straight points to win 25-17.
After trading points early in the fourth, TAMIU used another big run to take a 20-11 advantage. Cameron answered with a 6-2 stretch to cut the deficit to five points. The Dustdevils reached match-point at 24-18, and after CU scored two on a Navarrete kill and a block by Payne and Blount, they finished off the match with a block of their own by Maison Kosse and Elicia Jackson.
The Aggies are now 5-15 on the year and 1-9 in league play.
Cameron will be back in the friendly confines of the Aggie Gym next weekend as they host a pair on non-division Lone Star Conference opponents, St. Edward's and St. Mary's.
