LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron volleyball team was back in the Aggie Gym on Friday night, but the results was not favorable for the CU faithful as they fell 3-0 to St. Edward's.
The Aggies' sixth straight loss was a result of a struggling offensive attack that hit just .105 with 34 kills. They also totaled just three total blocks and three aces at the service, while their opponent was able to notch eight blocks as a team and eight service aces. The Hilltoppers also hit .313 with 44 kills in the three set match.
Shantalle Demirjian finished with a team-best nine kills to go along with two blocks on Friday night.
Arianna Navarrete added eight kills on a .211 attack percentage, while
Riana Blount chipped in seven kills while hitting .357.
Desiree Marmolejo and
Katherine Manning combined for 29 assists with Marmolejo recording her fourth double-double of the year adding a team-high 14 digs.
Kirsten Evans added 12 digs, while
Caitlyn Henderson led the Black and Gold with three blocks.
St. Edward's took seized hold of the momentum in the match early by taking a 9-3 lead to start set one. Cameron chipped away at the deficit, getting within two at 14-12 thanks to a pair of SEU errors. After trading scores, the Hilltoppers were able to extend their lead back out to seven after a 5-1 stretch to give them their 23rd point. CU got two points back on a pair of kills by Blount before St. Edward's ended the frame, 25-19, with back-to-back scores.
In the second, Cameron kept the score close early, before SEU found another 5-1 stretch to give them a 12-7 advantage. A few points later, they used a 9-2 stretch to go up 22-12 and ended up winning the frame 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Aggies were the team to jump out to an early lead in the third and led 11-7 after a solo block from Henderson. SEU then scored four straight to tie the match and then answered a
Sarah Wright kill with a 6-1 stretch to take a 17-13 lead. Cameron got back to within two points later in the set thanks to a block by Henderson and Demirjian that set the score at 20-18. However, the Hilltoppers closed out the frame on a 5-1 run to win 25-19 and end the match.
After Friday's loss, Cameron is now 5-16 overall in 2019 and 1-10 against Lone Star Conference opponents. They will look to snap their six-match skid on Saturday, Oct. 26, as they host the St. Mary's Rattlers for a match scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
