CU offense struggles in loss to No. 14 TSU

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Aggie volleyball team struggled against No. 14 Tarleton on Friday night, falling to the Texans in three sets.

Cameron could not get anything going offensively, totaling just 23 kills and hitting -0.29 for the match. The Aggies also had three service aces and four total blocks, but was overpowered by TSU, who had six aces, nine blocks, and hit over .300 on the attack.

Shantalle Demirjian had a team-high five kills with just one error during the three-set loss, while Maya Hill and Walia Franklin each added four kills. Setter Katherine Manning had 11 assists and eight digs to go along with one service ace.

The Black and Gold opened up the first set with a 4-1 lead before the home team Texans used a massive 13-1 run to take a 14-5 advantage. They carried that momentum throughout the rest of the frame and won 25-11.

In set two, Tarleton jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, and Cameron had to chip away at the lead, cutting it back down to two points thanks to a kill by Riana Blount that set the score at 13-11. The Aggies held tight for most of the frame, but a 4-0 run from the Texans would give them enough of a lead to take the second set 25-19.

Cameron stayed within striking distance of Tarleton in the first part of the final set, but TSU pulled away thanks to a pair of three point runs that gave them a 19-10 advantage. CU ended the stretch with a kill from Jillian Wright, but TSU answered with a 6-0 run to end the set with a 25-11 victory.

The loss drops the Aggies' record to 4-9 overall and 1-4 against Lone Star Conference opponents. They continue their road trip on Saturday as they visit Dallas Baptist University for 1 p.m. league battle.
