TYLER, Texas – Despite totaling 11.0 blocks against the UT Tyler Patriots on Friday night, the Aggie volleyball team lost their sixth straight division match, falling 3-1.
Cameron's defense kept them in the match against UTT, as they hit just .117 with 38 kills on offense in the four set match. On the other side of the court, their opponent hit .205 with 9.0 blocks, but also totaled six service aces, compared to CU's one.
Freshman
Caitlyn Henderson tallied a career-high 8.0 total blocks during Friday's match, adding three kills on the offensive end.
Shantalle Demirjian led CU with seven kills while also adding 3.0 blocks to the defensive effort, while libero
Peyton Little had another strong match with 18 digs. Setters
Katherine Manning and
Desiree Marmolejo combined for 29 assists and 14 digs.
In the first set, the Patriots jumped out to an early 11-6 lead and held that advantage until late in the frame. The Aggies used a 5-1 stretch to get back to within two points at 23-21, but UTT answered with a pair of kills to win the set 25-22.
UT Tyler jumped out to another early lead in the second, leading 5-1, before CU came back to tie the frame at seven thanks to a block by
Arianna Navarrete and
Riana Blount. After trading scores, the Black and Gold scored three straight to take their first second set lead at 13-12. Cameron then used a 7-2 stretch later in the frame to give them a 23-19 advantage. The Patriots scored four in a row to tie the set at 23, before a Henderson kill and a UTT error gave CU the 25-23 win to tie the match at one.
Cameron held tight early with Tyler in the third, but a 5-1 stretch and a 6-1 stretch late in the set gave them the 25-15 advantage that put them ahead in the match 2-1.
After playing a close fourth set, the Patriots went on a 7-1 stretch midway through the frame to take an 18-13 advantage. CU scored pair to break the run, but UTT answered with a 4-1 rally to lead 22-16. The Aggies got back to within three thanks to their own 4-1 stretch, but UTT answered with two more scores to win the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.
The Aggies are now 6-18 in 2019, with a 2-11 Lone Star Conference record and 1-6 in divisional play. They face another division foe on Saturday, as they visit No. 23 A&M-Commerce, who fell 3-2 to UAFS on Friday night. Frist serve for Saturday's match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
