Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nwakamma scores 25 in loss to UNK

HAYS, Kan.- Despite 25 points from senior Amaka Nwakamma, the Cameron University women's basketball team got off to a rough start this weekend with a loss to Nebraska Kearney to fall to 1-2 on the short season.

The Aggies made the trip up to Hays, Kansas for game one of their two-game weekend in the sunflower state on Friday.

After being down by just one after 10 minutes of play, the Aggies lost the second quarter 20-17 and trailed by four at the break. CU outscored the Lopers in the third quarter, 22-20, making the score 56-54 heading into the final frame.

In the fourth, Cameron kept it close early, even cutting the score the deficit to one on a pair of free throws by Maighan Hedge. However, UNK jumped back on top by nine thanks to an 8-0 run. They then stretched their lead to 11 before, a three by Kami Porter and a Whitney Outon layup with just a few ticks left on the clock closed out the six point loss.

Cameron was in a back-and-forth affair with the Lopers all night long. The lead exchanged sides ten times throughout the contest. Both teams were even down low, getting 32 points apiece in the paint. The Aggies upped the pace in this game, getting out for 16 fastbreak points.

Even without Ava Battese, the Aggies sharpshooting senior, the squad was still able to hit the deep ball at a 47 percent clip. Porter did most of the damage beyond the arc, going 3-4 from long range on her way to 11 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Porter was one of three Aggies in double figures.

Amaka Nwakamma turned in a team-high 25 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the floor and 50 percent from three-point land. The Redshirt Senior added a team-high eight rebounds to go along with her block and a steal.

CU was able to grab an impressive 71 percent mark from the charity stripe making 15 of their 21 attempts.

Hedge was the third Black and Gold member to reach double figures as she earned 15 points with six rebounds and three assists.

Off the bench, Junior transfer Logan Collyer scored a season-high six points and hit three treys to go along with two assists.

Up next for the Aggies will be a battle with No. 7 Fort Hays State on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 5 p.m.
