Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CU's second half struggles lead to loss

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron women's basketball team could not hold off a second half surge by Southwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday, falling 92-67 in CU's final non-conference contest; freshman Stephanie Peterson had a season-high 19 points in the loss.

The Black and Gold played their first game in front of their home fans this season against the ranked Bulldogs, who are led by former Aggie Kelsi Musick. Her Lady Bulldogs came into this afternoon tilt with CU boasting a 4-2 record. CU entered the day looking to snap a three-game skid and were on the right track after the first 20 minutes of play.

In the first quarter, CU played lights out defense only allowing 15 points in the frame, their season-best mark as a defense. Offensively, the Aggies put up 17 points in the games opening quarter, led by standout Sophomore Maighan Hedge who posted five points, to go along with her two rebounds and pair of steals. The Black and Gold also got a big lift off the bench from Peterson, who poured in four first-quarter points.

The second-quarter saw the Lady Bulldogs post 19 points, and up their shooting percentage from the floor by nine percent from the first frame, finishing the half shooting 34 percent from the floor. CU head coach Emma Andrews said the focus coming into the season was defending the three-point line, and in the first half, they excelled at that task, holding the Lady Bulldogs to just eight percent from deep (1-for-12).

Cameron fell into a shooting slump in the second quarter scoring a basket less than their first-quarter output as their field goal percentage dipped eight percentage points. Peterson finished the half with ten points and three rebounds, shooting nearly 60 percent from the field (57 percent); the Broomfield, Colo. produced a career-high in points in the first 20 minutes of the contest.

The Aggies' second-quarter slump carried into a third-quarter struggle, as they were only able to score 14 points in the third frame, falling behind by 22 points and giving Lady Bulldogs their largest lead of the afternoon. Elgin, Okla. native Ava Battese was able to drop nine points in the frame as the program record holder for career threes nailed a trio of trey balls in the third.

In the fourth quarter, CU continued to fight but could not overcome the Lady Bulldogs 22-point lead built up in the previous period, which was later stretched to as many as 29 points in this contest.

Musick and SWOSU improved to 6-3 against her alma mater Aggies. The team was led by Maddie Sperle, who posted a team-high 23 points with two rebounds and a steal all while shooting 60 percent from deep.

Peterson finished with a team and career-high 19 points on 57 percent from the floor. The first-year Aggie also finished with five rebounds, an assist, a block, and two steals. The Black and Gold saw two additional players reach double figures with Battese pouring in 13 points and Amaka Nwakamma adding ten points.

Cameron recorded a season-high in assists, collecting 16 assists against SWOSU, building on their ten-assist outing last game against Central Oklahoma, which was the previous season-high. Defensively, the Aggies recorded season-bests in blocks and steals with seven swats and 12 takeaways.

Now 1-5 on the season, the Aggies will hit the road to open up Lone Star Conference play with a date in Silver City, N.M. with the Western New Mexico Mustangs. That game is set for Dec. 7 and will tip-off at 3 p.m. (CT).
