LAREDO, Texas – The Cameron baseball team started their season off with a 2-0 win over Texas A&M-International behind a strong pitching performance from
Devin Castro and
Sean Maher.
Â
Castro got the start in the Aggies season opener, facing off against Ruben Solis for the Dustdevils. The two matched zeros through three innings, but at the top half of the fourth frame, Solis ran into a bit of trouble.
Â
Cameron opened the inning with a walk from
Jaylan Prince, and a batter later, Solis had a pitch run in and hit
Myles Miller to get two aboard with one out. That brought up
Trey Bigford who singled to right and plated Prince. Solis escaped the jam by only giving up the one run after getting
Briton Schiewe to pop out with runners on the corners.
          Â
The Aggies would threaten again in the fifth when again Solis hit a batter, putting
Cooper Edwards aboard. A single from
Jordan Harrison-Dudley put two on with no outs. After a pair of outs,
Izrael Trevino delivered a clutch two out single that brought Edwards around to score, giving the Black and Gold a 2-0 lead.
Â
Castro pitched into the sixth inning, but with only one out and two runners on, his day was done. He finished with five strikeouts, and only three hits allowed while also only giving up one walk.
Â
Maher was able to clean up the sixth inning coming out of the bullpen with two quick strikeouts to leave a pair of Dustdevils stranded. The side-armed hurler came back out for the seventh, getting his third strikeout of the day to start the seventh before allowing his first hit. With two outs, the Dustdevils were able to get the tying run to the plate, but Maher was able to induce a ground out to end the game and earn the Aggies their first win of the season.
Â
Castro earned the win, and Maher came in for the save. Jor. Harrison-Dudley had a big day at the plate collecting a pair of hits, accounting for half the Aggies total.
                     Â
Friday's slate was scheduled as a doubleheader. The two teams battled to a 5-5 ball game at the end of nine innings, but due to darkness, the game was suspended until Saturday at noon.
Â
Cameron and Texas A&M-International will pick things up in the 10th inning of game two tomorrow at noon and then will follow that up with another nine-inning contest to complete the series.
