Pitching gem and offensive explosion lead to 2-0 day for Cameron softball

CONROE, Texas – Cameron uses a gem from Rylee Willmon and Bethany Hines in one game and a six RBI game from Madyson Marvulli in the second to go 2-0 on Friday at the Arkansas Tech Winter Invitational.

In game one of the day against Minnesota Duluth, the Aggies didn't need much offense, as Willmon and Hines combined for an opening day gem. Willmon went the first three innings, giving up just one run on four hits with three Ks. Hines finished off the game with four innings of one-hit pitching in which she struck out four to earn the win.

The first of Cameron's two runs came right off the bat in the first thanks to their twin duo. Brenna Busby double to left center and then three batters later, her sister, Callie Busby, drove her in on a single through the right side.

After a scoreless second, the Bulldogs got on the board for their first and only run of the game in the bottom of the third thanks to a leadoff single and a two-out RBI double.

Cameron answered in the top of the fourth. Freshman Khmari Edwards reached on a one-out infield single and then after advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and then scored on a throwing error by the UMD catcher.

From then on, it was Hines' game. The junior struck out two in the fourth and then got one-two-three innings in the fifth in sixth. She ran into a little trouble in the seventh, giving up a leadoff single, but got the next batter to foul out on a bunt and then got a strike-em out, throw-em out double-play to end the game.

All five of CU's hits in game one came off different bats, with C. Busby recording the only RBI.

After a pitching duel in the first game, the Aggies decided to put up some runs in the second game of the day against St. Edward's.

Cameron struck for four runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a grand slam from Marvulli. It all started with a B. Busby single followed by a single by Kaylyn Smith to put a pair on. After Breley Webb grounded out, C. Busby walked to load the bases. That is when the sophomore from Yucaipa, Calif. emptied the base paths with one swing of the bat.

Three Hilltopper hits and a CU error led to three runs in the top of the second, making it a one run game, but that didn't last long.
In their half of the second, Cameron added three of their own to extend their lead to 7-3. Erycka Pierce singled and then scored with one out on a B. Busby double, and then three batters later, C. Busby plated two more as Webb and B. Busby crossed the plate.

Walks plagued the Aggies in the third as three straight brought in STE's second run of the inning to get them within two of the Black and Gold.

Cameron's biggest inning came in the bottom half of the third frame when they put six runs on the board. Edwards led it off with a walk and then in the next at bat, senior Alyssa Osterdock notched her first homer of her senior campaign, putting CU up 9-5. A single, hit by pitch, and walk loaded the bases with one out for the freshman Webb. She delivered with a walk and then in the next at bat, C. Busby drove in her sister on a groundout to short. Marvulli then stepped up again and lined a two-out double down the right field line to score both Webb and Smith.

Transfer Turner Whorton then shot down the Hilltoppers in the fourth and the fifth to earn the run-rule victory. Whorton went 2.2 innings and allowed just one hit with two Ks, while Webb pitched the first 2.1 with just two earned runs on five hits allowed.

Marvulli ended the game 2-3 with six RBI, while B. Busby was 2-3 with three runs scored and C. Busby was 1-2 with three runs driven in.

Cameron, who is now 2-0 on the season, will face Colorado School of Mines at 1 p.m. and No. 20 Arkansas Tech at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday for the second day of the invite.
