Hines and Willmon help CU move to 4-0

CONROE, Texas – The Cameron softball team got two remarkable pitching performances from Bethany Hines and Rylee Willmon as they moved to 4-0 on the season with a 3-0 win over Colorado School of Mines and an 11 inning 3-2 win over No. 20 Arkansas Tech.

Cameron opened game one of the day against the Orediggers with a two-spot in the first inning. Brenna Busby led off the inning with a four-pitch walk, but after stealing second and moving to third on a Kaylyn Smith infield single, she was thrown out at home trying to score on a bunt by her sister Callie Busby. In the next at bat, C. Busby got in a run down and Smith stole home for the first score of the game. C. Busby then came in to score in the next at bat as Madyson Marvulli singled to right to put the Aggies up 2-0 early.

The Aggies would only need one of those runs in the game though, as Hines was outstanding in the circle. The junior scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings, showing strong control with no walks and six punchouts.

In the seventh, CU added an insurance run on a Khmari Edwards RBI single that drove in Abbey Warren, who led off the inning with a bunt single to first base. Hines then retired the Orediggers in order in the bottom of the inning to secure the 3-0 win.

Hines improved to 2-0 on the young season with the win, while the Aggies remained perfect at 3-0.

Cameron's seven hits were spread throughout seven players, with Marvulli and Edwards collecting an RBI each.

Game two of the day against No. 20 Arkansas Tech was another pitcher's duel and a marathon.

After scoreless first and second innings, the Aggies were the first on the board in the top of the third. Warren led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error, and after advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, the senior scored on a sacrifice fly ball by B. Busby.

Willmon did a good job of pitching out of trouble the whole game, but after a leadoff triple in the fifth, the Golden Suns were able to tie the game with a sac fly of their own.

It would not be until the eighth inning until another run would cross the plate. Smith singled with one out for CU, and then went all the way to third on a sac bunt from Raley Long. C. Busby then gave the Aggies a 2-1 lead as she drove in Smith on a single to right.

A leadoff double in the top of the eighth spelled trouble for Cameron. Willmon was able to get the next two batters out, but a two-out single from Bailey Bunch tied the game again and sent it to the ninth.

Cameron finally broke the tie in the top of the 11th by manufacturing a run. Long singled to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a Breley Webb single two batters later. After an infield fly by Edwards, Long stole third to put runners on the corners with two outs. CU head coach Dennis Furr then reached into his bag of tricks again, as Webb got caught in-between first and second, Long came in to score and put her team up 3-2.

Willmon, who was in her 11th inning of work, got two quick outs to start the bottom of the frame, and after a single by Paty Loredo, she got Megan Goodnight to ground out and end the game.

The win was well deserved for Willmon, who went 11 innings, giving up just two earned runs on 13 hits while striking out seven and walking four. She stranded 14 Golden Sun runners on base to earn her second victory of the season.

C. Busby led CU with three hits and an RBI, while Smith also had three hits and Long and Webb each had a pair.

The Aggies will wrap up the Arkansas Tech Winter Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 3, as they take on Pittsburg State at 2 p.m. and No. 25 Augustana at 4:30 p.m.
