Cameron drops finale at LCU

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Cameron baseball team lost their first series of the season as they fell in the weekend finale against Lubbock Christian on Monday, 18-8.

After scoring one run during the second and third games of the series on Saturday, Cameron looked to have broken out of their hitting slump as they scored two runs in the top of the first.

Izrael Trevino led off the inning with a single through the left side and then a batter later, Jordan Harrison-Dudley moved the CU first baseman to second on a single of his own. Trey Bigford then smacked a ball up the middle to drive in Trevino and give his team a one run lead. The Aggies then loaded the bases in the next at bat as Tyler Wood was hit by a pitch. CU's starting pitcher, Dillon Turney, the reached on an infield single to short to add a second run to the scoreboard. Despite having the bases loaded with only one out, that would all Cameron would get in the inning as LCU retired the next to hitter to work out of the jam.

The Chaps did not take long to answer, as they scored one run in the bottom of the first, seven more in the second, and four in the third to jump out to a 12-2 advantage.

Cameron had a big inning in their half of the fourth, as three straight singled to lead off the inning resulted in their third run of the game. After Hayden Jaco walked to load the bases with no outs, Harrison came up and walked as well to bring in Briton Schiewe, who had a base hit earlier in the inning. Two batters later, Wood would drive in Trevino as he grounded out on a high chopper to the second baseman. Turney and Pierce Khan then delivered clutch two-out RBI doubles to add three more to the CU score. They trailed just 12-8 in the middle of the fourth.

Unfortunately, the Lubbock Christian bats remained hot and they responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame and then added one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and then capped off the game with their final run in the eight to secure the 18-8 run-rule victory. LCU totaled 23 hits in the contest.

The Aggies managed 11 hits on the day, with Trevino, Bigford, and Turney each collecting two; Turney led the team with two RBI and Trevino scored twice in the eight-inning contest.

Turney did not fare so well in his start on the mound, giving up six runs on five hits in just 1.1 innings of work for his first loss of the season. The only pitcher in the game for CU that had success was Brody Curry, who gave up just one run on three hits during his 2.1 innings pitched.

With the loss, Cameron falls to below .500 for the first time in 2019 at 3-4. They will look to bounce back this weekend, Feb. 15-17, as they host UT Tyler for a three game set. The Friday and Saturday games of the series have been rescheduled to begin at 3 p.m., while the finale on Sunday is set to start at 1 p.m.
