Week 8 Game Notes
Starting 5:
1. The Aggies are currently eight in the Lone Star Conference standings with a 4-9 record; they are just a half game behind UT Permian Basin in seventh and are two games ahead of MSU Texas, who is in ninth with a 2-11 league mark.
2. Cameron senior guard
Tyus Momoh is just five points away from being the 18th member of the programs 1,000 point club; Momoh has averaged 19.5 points over the team's last four games.
3. UT Permian Basin the top offensive teams in the conference, averaging a league leading 86.5 points per game while shooting 50.2 percent from the field.
4. UTPB's Jacob Ledoux is ranked in the top-5 of the conference in three pointers made and attempted, field goals made and attempted, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, total points and points per game.
5. Western New Mexico ranks at the bottom of the league in almost every statistical category, while Leston Gordon ranks third in the league with 1.4 blocks per game and fifth with 26 total blocks and Jon-Reese Woodson is third in the conference with 113 free throw attempts.
Week 7 Recap:
The Aggies suffered two tough losses last week falling to Texas A&M-Commerce 87-78 and Tarleton State 75-65. Against the Lions, the two teams were tied 34-34 at halftime, but a second half run by TAMUC led to them leading by 18 with 2:16 left in the game. Commerce shot 62.5 percent from the field and went 10-16 from three during their second half offensive explosion. Momoh led the Aggies with 20 points, going 9-9 from the foul line, while
Kendall Scott added a career-high 17 points and
Zach Dumas also had 17 points. CU led by six points at the half against the Texans, but went cold in the second 20 minutes, shooting just 22.5 percent from the field and going 2-8 from three. TSU was on fire in the second half, shooting 52 percent from the field in the final frame. Momoh once again had a team-high with 17 points, as Dumas chipped in 12 points and
Brock Schreiner added 11.
About the Aggies:
Cameron is now 8-15 overall this season and 4-9 in league play after losing their third straight contest last Saturday at Tarleton State. They are averaging 75.1 points per game while giving up 80.1 points to their opposition. CU is shooting just under 40 percent from the field, while going 35.6 percent from three and 73.3 percent from the free throw line. Additionally, the Black and Gold average 35.8 rebounds, 12.3 assists, 8.2 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game. They rank first in the league in total steals (188) and are top-15 in the nation in free throws attempted (559) and made (410). Momoh leads the team with 13.9 points, 4.3 assists, and 1.9 steals per outing while also averaging 4.8 rebounds. Dumas averages 13.3 points per contest, while Lewis averages 9.2 points and
Johann Tate chips in 9.1 per game.
Scouting the Falcons:
After starting the season with an 8-1 record, the Falcons are now 11-11 on the season with a 4-8 Lone Star Conference mark. Most recently, they lost 83-66 at Eastern New Mexico and 105-82 at West Texas A&M. While UTPB averages a league best 86.5 points per game, they give up over 81 points to their opposition. They are also shooting over 50 percent from the floor, 38.4 percent from three, and 73.5 percent from the free throw line. UT Permian Basin also averages 15.8 assists, 38.9 rebounds, 8.3 steals, and 3.0 blocks per game. Ledoux averages a team-best 17.6 points per game, while Kyree Elder averages 14.9 points and Xavier Ledet chips in 10.2 points per outing; four other Falcons average eight points or more.
Last Time Against UTPB:
The Black and Gold came out firing in the first half against UT Permian Basin in the two teams first meeting this season. CU shot 58.3 percent from the floor while hitting 10-18 from three during the first 20 minutes. However, they could not keep up their hot shooting while UTPB kept up their plus-50 percent field goal percentage in both halves; the Falcons finished the game going 14-26 from three point range. Elder scored 34 points to lead all scorers as he went 6-8 from three point range. Ledoux added 12 points for UTPB and Ledet was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. Momoh scored a CU-high 17 points, while
Jordan Lewis chipped in 16 and Scott added 13 and Schreiner scored 10.
Scouting the Mustangs:
Western New Mexico now owns a 4-15 overall record and a 1-11 LSC mark after losing their games last week against WT (104-81) and ENMU (98-80). They have lost four straight with their last and only conference win coming on Jan. 24 against Texas A&M-Commerce. The Mustangs average 72.6 points per game, but are getting outscored by 10.7 points per outing. They are shooting 42.2 percent from the floor, 31.9 percent from three point range, and 66 percent from the foul line. WNMU also averages 32.7 rebounds, 10.2 assists, 7.6 steals, and 2.7 blocks per game. Woodson leads the team with a scoring average of 12.3 points, while Willie McCray chips in 11.0 points per game.
Last Time Against WNMU:
Earlier this season against the Mustangs, Cameron only shot just 42.1 percent from the floor and 21.1 percent from three, but made it to the foul line 41 times, making 31 of their free throw attempts in the 82-70 win. Momoh scored 15 points to lead the Aggies, while
Jalen Nicholas and Schreiner added 14 points each and Lewis chipped in 12 points while going 8-10 from the foul line. On the other side of the court, WNMU shot 42.3 percent from the field, 53.3 percent from three, and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe. Amarion Cash led the way with 14 points, while McCray added 13 points and CJ Vanbeekum and Woodson also reached double-figures.

The Aggies will finish up their road stretch on Tuesday, Feb. 19 as they visit Red River rival MSU Texas. They will then finish up the regular season a week later by hosting Texas A&M-Kingsville on Feb. 28 and Angelo State on March 2.
