WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Cameron men's basketball team completed a 17-point comeback against MSU Texas, but fell in the final seconds as the Mustangs kept their postseason hopes alive with a 62-59 win.
In the first matchup of the season between CU and MSU, Cameron completed a second half comeback for a 71-70 win over the Mustangs thanks to a last second three pointer from
Tyus Momoh. In the second game of the season series, it was MSU who got a clutch shot in the final seconds to secure the victory.
A Dumas layup a minute and six seconds into the game gave CU a 2-0 lead to start the game. The Mustangs then went on a 15-1 run to jump out to an 18-3 advantage. During that span, CU went 1-8 from the field and had seven turnovers. A layup from
Zach Dumas at the 11:57 mark ended the scoring drought, but MSU road that momentum into a 31-19 lead at the break.
The Aggies shot just 22.2 percent from the field while going 1-9 from three and 6-8 from the free throw line in the first half. They were led by Dumas with five points, while
Chris Royal and
Jordan Lewis each added four points.
Cameron opened up the second half on a 13-2 run and by the second media timeout in the half trailed by just one 33-32. A free throw from Dumas just a minute later tied the game for the first time since the start of the game. The two teams battled back and forth until MSU went back up by seven with 8-1 at the 9:44. Royal scored five straight to get to within three. After a Mustang free throw, Momoh came alive for four straight to tie the game at 49 with just under six minutes to play.
A 4-3 swing in favor of CU in the next couple of minutes gave them their second one point lead of the second half, however, MSU scored five straight to go back up by four. Cameron answered right back, this time with
Brock Schreiner scoring four straight to tie the contest at 57 points. The two teams traded a pair of FT's and with just 23 seconds left, the score was knotted again. MSU Texas ran the clock down as much as they could until Terrell Wilson made a layup with just two ticks on the clock. CU got the ball back, but a five second out of bounds violation gave the Mustangs the ball right back. The Aggies were forced to foul and JaJuan Starks made 1-2 to secure the 62-59 win.
The Aggies finished the game shooting just over 32 percent from the field while going 2-14 from three and 19-26 from the charity stripe. They turned the ball over 16 times, but forced MSU into 24 giveaway, 12 of which came via steals. Royal finished with a team-high 12 points and Dumas added 10 points.
MSU Texas was led by Gilbert Thomas, Jr., who made a case to be the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week with 16 points, 23 rebounds, and six blocks in the game. As a team, the Mustangs shot 36.5 percent from the field, while going 10-25 from three and 14-24 from the foul line.
The Mustangs win evened the two teams up in the LSC standings with 4-12 records each (they are both 8-18 overall). Cameron and MSU both face Texas A&M-Kingsville and Angelo State next week with the final spot in the conference tournament on the line.
Cameron will return home for their final two games of the regular season as they host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday, Feb. 28, and then Angelo State on Saturday, March 2.
