Dumas reaches milestone in loss at Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas – Despite being tied 34-34 at halftime, the Cameron men's basketball team lost a shootout in the second half against Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday night, falling 87-78.

Cameron's side of the box score looked impressive by itself, as they shot 45.5 percent from the field, went 10-21 from three and 18-20 at the foul line. However, the Lions were blazing hot on offensive, shooting over 54 percent from the floor and going 16-31 from three-point range. They also out-rebounded the Black and Gold 34-21, scoring 14 second change points compared to CU's six.

Tyus Momoh led Cameron with 20 points, going 3-5 from three and 9-9 from the foul line. Kendall Scott set a new career-high with 17 points on 8-11 shooting from the field, while senior Zach Dumas also scored 17 points, giving him 1,002 for his career (527 at Northwestern and 475 at Cameron). Dumas was 5-9 from the floor, going 3-4 from three and 4-4 from the foul line. Brock Schreiner also was in double-figures with 12 points for CU.

The first half was back and forth until Cameron used a 9-0 to take a 20-13 lead with 10:17 on the clock. TAMUC answered with an 11-0 stretch of their own to take back the lead, 24-20. CU finished the half by outscoring their opponent 14-10 in the final eight minutes to even the score at 34 points each at the break.

Cameron shot just 39.3 percent from the field in the first half, but went 5-10 from three and 7-9 from the free throw line to keep them in the game. Dumas led the way with eight points in the first 20 minutes of play, while Momoh and Scott both had seven.

Both teams were on fire in the second half, but the Aggies could not keep pace with the Lions, who shot 62.5 percent from the floor and went 10-16 from three in the final 20 minutes of play. CU held their own with a 51.9 field goal percentage and a perfect free throw percentage, but it was not enough as the Lions held on for the 87-78 win.

Srdan Budimir led TAMUC with 24 points, scoring 16 in the second half, while Wayne Steward added 21 and Willie Rooks and Carson Tuttle each were in double-figures as well.

Cameron is now 8-14 overall this season and 4-8 in Lone Star Conference play. They sit in eighth in the league standings while Texas A&M-Commerce is in second with a 9-3 LSC record and a 17-5 overall mark.

The Aggies will look to bounce back on Saturday, Feb. 9, as they visit Tarleton State to wrap up the season series against the Texans.
