STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Aggie men's basketball team led by six at halftime against Tarleton State, but a late run by the Texans secure them the 75-65 win on Saturday afternoon.
Despite their strong start to the contest, Cameron shot just 34.3 percent from the field, 45 percent from three, and was 8-14 from the charity stripe after struggling in the final 20 minutes. TSU blocked nine shots on the defensive end, while shooting 52 percent from the field and going 14-19 from the foul line on offense.
Tyus Momoh finished the game with 17 points on 6-17 shooting from the floor. He now needs just five points to join the 1,000 point club at Cameron.
Zach Dumas added 12 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while
Brock Schreiner added 11 points.
Tarleton State came out firing early in the first half, going on an 11-3 run to open the game. CU quickly erased that lead thanks to a pair of threes from Momoh and a layup from Schreiner that tied the game at 11 at the 14:12 mark. After trading buckets, TSU went back to work and went on a 10-0 run to go up by 11 with just over 10 minutes left in the half. Cameron chipped away at the lead but still trailed by six with just under five minutes of the clock. At the 3:28 mark CU began a 14-1 run that saw them go 6-6 from the field to hold a 39-33 lead at the break.
The Aggies shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, going a red-hot 7-12 from three and 2-4 from the foul line. They also out-rebounded TSU 18-13 though the first 20 minutes of play. Momoh had 15 points on 5-6 shooting from three to lead CU, while Josh Hawley led the Texans with 10 points. Â Â
Tarleton State quickly erased Cameron's halftime lead thanks to a 9-2 run to begin the half. After trading scores, TSU used another run, this time a 6-0 stretch to go up 45-40 with 12:20 left to play. Cameron then used an 11-2 run of their own to take a four point lead of their own with 8:12 on the clock. Tarleton answered with seven straight points to go back on top at the 4:21 mark. Chris Royal put CU up 64-62 with a pair of free throws at the 2:35 mark. From there, TSU went on a 13-1 run where Cameron missed eight straight field goals to give the home team the 75-65 win.
Hawley finished with a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Randall Broddie added 17 points and Corinthian Ramsey, Jessie Hill, and Sam Marshall all added double-digit scoring games for the Texans.
Cameron is now 8-15 overall this season with a 4-9 Lone Star Conference mark, while Tarleton State improves to 18-6 with an 8-5 league mark.
The Aggies will continue their road stretch next week, as they travel to UT Permian Basin on Feb. 14 and then Western New Mexico on Feb. 16.
