COMMERCE, Texas – The Cameron women's basketball team struggled on the road at Texas A&M-Commerce, falling 91-58 for their third straight loss.
Cameron's loss was evident in the box score as they were outrebounded 49-23, leading to a 25-4 second chance point advantage for the Lions. CU shot just 39 percent from the floor, hitting 8-19 from three and 6-10 from the foul line. They also turned the ball over a season-high 31 times, leading to 29 TAMUC points off turnovers.
Ava Battese was the lone Aggie in double-figures, scoring 15 points on 5-11 shooting from long range.
Maighan Hedge and
Parfitt McNair both chipped in nine points, while
Whitney Outon added eight.
The Lions came out firing in the first quarter, going on an 11-2 run in the first four minutes. Cameron hit a three to stop the run, but the home team kept firing and led 18-5 at the 4:30 mark. CU used a 7-0 run of their own to get to within six, but TAMUC closed out the frame with five straight to take a 23-12 lead.
The second quarter was not much better for the Black and Gold as they shot just 4-12 from the field and 1-5 from the foul line to be outscored 18-12 in the frame. The Lions finished the half on a 4-0 run to own a 41-24 lead at the break.
Commerce's best quarter came in the third as they used a 15-3 stretch to open the half and extend their lead to 29 points at the 3:38 mark. They carried that momentum into the fourth quarter. While the Aggies scored 24 points in the final 10 minutes, TAMUC went 12-14 in the final frame to secure the 91-58 win.
Five Lions reached double-digits in scoring on Thursday, with Ekaterina Zhibareva leading the way with 17 points on 8-10 shooting and Chania Wright adding a 13 points, 12 rebound double-double.
The Aggies are now 7-13 on the season with a 4-9 Lone Star Conference record that has them sitting in eighth place in the conference standings. TAMUC moves to 14-7 overall and 9-4 in LSC play with the win.
Cameron will continue their road stretch on Saturday, Feb. 9, as they visit Tarleton State for a 2 p.m. tip. Â
