EDMOND, Okla. -- The Aggie softball team started their second weekend of play on Saturday with a 1-1 split at the Raising Cane's Edmond Softball festival behind a no-hit gem from
Rylee Willmon.
In Game one against the Central Oklahoma, the Aggies started threatening early when
Callie Busby hit a double down the right field line to put runners on second and third with less than two outs. Broncos pitcher Sydney Mcleod was able to get out of the early jam getting two quick outs to end the frame.
Bethany Hines went into the circle for the Black and Gold to try to set the tone for this weekend's tournament that will spill into Monday afternoon. The Broncos offense got a threat of their own cooking in the bottom half of the first, as they got two runners on with less than two outs for Jody Heath, who cleared the bases with a three-run shot to deep center field. That gave UCO a 3-0 advantage early. The Broncos did not stop there, exploding for two more runs when Casady Webb singled through the left side of the Aggie infield. Only three runs of UCO's five first-inning scoring outburst were charged to Hines as CU committed a pair of errors in the inning.
The UCO offense picked up in the second inning where they left off in the first as H Randolph hit a home run to left field to tack on two more runs, extending the Bronco lead to 7-0. In the third inning, the Broncos scratched another run across when Allie Eicher came around to score on a ground out to the right side of the infield.
The Aggies got their first run across in the fourth inning when
Alyssa Osterdock singled up the middle, plating
Carly Johnson with
Khmari Edwards coming around to score on a throwing error.
Abbey Warren came around to score, and then CU cut the Broncos lead in half when
Brenna Busby singled through the left side scoring Osterdock to make it an 8-4 contest.
After threatening in the sixth and coming away with nothing, CU had one more chance to erase the four run deficit in the seventh and final inning. The Black and Gold came up short falling 8-4 at the hands of the Broncos in game one of the tournament.
The Aggies had a quick turnaround playing game two immediately following the 8-4 loss, CU clashed with Southern Nazarene.
CU started game two off with a bang, as the offense served up a trio of runs in the first frame.
Kaylyn Smith doubled with one out, followed by a C. Busby walk, both of whom were plated on an RBI double courtesy of
Abbey Warren. Warren came around to score on a
Khmari Edwards single.
In the third inning, B. Busby scored on a
Breley Webb double. Webb came around to score on a Storm error extending the Aggie lead to 6-0. Johnson lifted a solo shot over the center field wall with two outs to make it 7-0 Aggies to close out the third.
Cameron grabbed another run in the fourth when Smith got an RBI knock that scored B. Busby.
Aliyah Young darted home on a wild pitch to make the Black and Gold lead swell to nine runs entering the fifth.
The game ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule, which gave Willmon a five-inning complete game shutout. Willmon did not allow a single hit throughout her five innings of work, and just a single walk got in the way of a perfect game for the senior from Luther, Okla.
Cameron improves to 5-3 on the season and look to keep their momentum alive tomorrow when they take on Southeastern Oklahoma State and Northeastern State at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively.
