EDMOND, Okla. – Cameron softball opened up Sunday with an 11-0 blowout of Southeastern Oklahoma State before holding on for the 6-5 win over Northeastern State in the nightcap.
Â
The Aggies made quick work of Southeastern Oklahoma in the first game of the day. They got things started in the first scoring two runs on three hits.
Kaylyn Smith singled to center with one out and then scored on a
Breley Webb double in the next at bat.
Callie Busby then drove in Webb on a double of her own to give CU the 2-0 advantage.
Â
Cameron added another run in the second to add to their lead.
Carly Johnson led off the inning with a triple and then after a pair of outs,
Brenna Busby singled through the left side to bring in Johnson.
Â
After a scoreless third inning, the Black and Gold exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth tanks to six hits in the inning. A single from
Khmari Edwards opened up the inning and then Johnson walked to put two on with no outs. After stealing second and third, both Edwards and Johnson came around to score on a double from
Madyson Marvulli. B. Busby walked singled and Smith walked to load the bases with one out. After Webb reached on a fielder's choice that saw
Raley Long thrown out at home, It looked like the Storm was going to get out of a bases loaded jam.
Â
Cameron had other ideas as C. Busby walked in a run and then
Abbey Warren singled to add two more to the Aggie score. Edwards came up to the plate for her second at bat of the inning and jacked a ball over the left field to unload the bases. The CU freshman's first career-homer gave her team their 11-0 advantage.
Â
The CU pitching staff would have only needed one run to get the win against SOSU. Webb pitched the first four innings, gave up four hits, and struck out two, while
Bethany Hines threw the final frame, giving up one hit and striking out three.
Â
Game two against Northeastern State was a battle between two very good teams.
Â
In the top of the second, Cameron got the scoring started by putting two runs on the board on one hit and three NSU errors. Warren reached on an error with one out already put on the board. Edwards then grounded a ball to short, but an error allowed both Warren and Edwards to reach safely. CU head coach
Dennis Furr then put the double-steal on and a throwing error by the Riverhawks catcher allowed Warren to come in to score.
Â
After a Johnson infield single and an
Alyssa Osterdock sacrifice, Long walked to load the bases for B. Busby. Busby walked as well, bringing in Edwards from third. NSU got Smith to groundout to strand three in the inning.
Â
Northeastern had their big inning in the bottom of the third when they scored five runs on two hits and a CU error. The first run came on a bases loaded error by the Aggie third baseman, while the next three runs scored on a two out triple to right center. NSU scored their fifth run as their runner on third stole home while the runner on second was caught in a rundown.
Â
That three run lead did not remain intact long though, as Cameron answered with four runs on three hits in the top of the fourth. Edwards led off the inning with a walk and then scored on an Osterdock single up the middle two batters later.
Erycka Pierce walked in the next at bat to put two on for B. Busby. The CU shortstop then hit her first homer of the season with a bomb to left field, giving her team the 6-5 advantage.
Â
Turner Whorton, who started the game, pitched a scoreless fourth and then
Rylee Willmon came in to pitch in the fifth and despite a leadoff walk and a single to open the inning, put up another zero on the bottom line of the scoreboard.
Â
In the sixth, Willmon once again allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base, but was able to retire the next three batters to keep the score locked at 6-5.
Â
After Cameron was held scoreless for the third straight inning in the top of the seventh, Willmon got into another jam in the bottom of the frame. The senior walked the first two batters, forcing Furr to make the move to the ben and bring in Hines. Cameron's single season wins record holder struck out the first batter she faced but the walked the next, loading the bases with just one out. Hines focused up and got a lineout to the first the second out and then another swinging strikeout for the final out and the save.
Â
Whorton, who went 4.0 innings, gave up five runs, none of which were earned, on two hits and five walks, received her second win of the season. Willmon went 2.0 innings, giving up two hits, walking three, and striking out two, while Hines earned her first save of the season thanks to a no-hit seventh inning with two K's.
Â
B. Busby had three hits and five RBI on the day for CU, while Edwards was 3-5 with four RBI and four runs scored during the two-game span.
Â
The Aggies, who are now 7-3 on the season, will wrap up the Edmond Festival on Monday as they take on Rogers State at 4 p.m.
