Softball goes 2-1 on Friday

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Cameron softball team went 2-1 at the shortened version of the Missouri Southern TMZ Invitational on Friday, winning games against Northwest Missouri State and Northeastern State.

In the tripleheader event, the Aggies opened the day with a 9-3 win against the Bearcats. CU trailed 2-0 early before taking a 3-2 lead with one run in the third and two more in the fourth. After NWMSU tied the game in the fifth, Cameron exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh to win the game 9-3.

Brenna Busby had a three run homer in the seventh, while Breley Webb added two more RBI in the game. Kaylyn Smith led CU with a 2-3 day, adding a runs scored and an RBI of her own. Bethany Hines got the win in the circle, giving up three runs on seven hits with three K's.

Game two of the day was a 4-2 loss to Missouri Western. B. Busby stole a run to open the game in the top of the first, but the Griffons answered with four in the bottom of the frame. Both teams were held scoreless for the next five innings before Cameron added one more in the top of the seventh on a Khmari Edwards homer.

Cameron got two hit performances Edwards, Alyssa Osterdock, Erycka Pierce and Smith. Turner Whorton got the loss, going the first 1.1 innings in the circle, while Rylee Willmon threw 4.2 no-hit innings to end the game.

In the third game against Northeastern State, a trio of Aggies combined for eight strikeouts to earn the 2-1 win. B. Busby scored on a sacrifice fly to open the game and then hit a solo homer in the third to give CU a 2-0 lead. The Riverhawks cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth, but Hines closed out the game for her third save of the season.

B. Busby led CU with a 2-3 game with one RBI and two runs scored. Willmon gave up just one hit in three innings of work with three K's, while Webb struck out four in her three innings in the circle.

Cameron, who is now 13-8 on the season, will be back at McMahon Field next weekend as they host Texas A&M-Kingsville for a three game series, March 8-9. Game one of the series is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
