LAWTON, Okla. –
Breley Webb's walk-off three-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning propelled the Cameron softball team to a 6-3 win over No. 15 Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday.
The game started out a pitching duel between Webb and the reigning Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week Saidi Castillo. Neither freshman hurler gave up a hit in the first inning. Cameron's first base knock of the game came on a leadoff single by Webb in the bottom of the second, but Castillo was able to get the next three batters out to escape the inning.
Castillo would not find the same luck in the third inning, as
Brenna Busby jacked a one-out bomb to right field to give CU a 1-0 lead, and two batters later
Khmari Edwards put one over the fence to extend the lead to 3-0.
Webb got into trouble in the next half inning and a two-run homer off the bat of Veronica Chavez gave the Javelinas their first runs of the game and cut the deficit to just one.
Bethany Hines came in to relieve Webb and get the final three outs of the top of the fourth. Â
In the top of the sixth, TAMUK tied up the game as Roxy Chapa led off the inning with a solo shot to left field. Hines was able to get out the sixth and then pitch a scoreless top of the seventh to give the Aggies a chance with in the bottom to win the game in their half of the frame.
B. Busby led off the inning with a walk and then moved to second on stolen base in the next at bat. Edwards then walked to put two runners on for
Callie Busby with just one-out in the inning. C. Busby popped up to shallow right field, leaving it up to the freshman Webb to end the game. Webb the plastered one to deep right-center field, her second of the season, to end the game with a 6-3 upset victory.
Webb ended the game with three hits, three RBI, and one run scored. In the circle, she gave up two runs on two hits and two walks with six strikeouts in her 3.2 innings of work. Hines threw the final 3.1 in the circle to earn her sixth win of the year. She also had six K's and gave just the one run on three hits and a walk.
B. Busby was 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Edwards was 1-2 with two runs scored and two driven in.
Castillo received just her second loss of the season, giving up six runs on six hits and six walks, and had six punchouts. The Hogs five hits were spread across five batters with Chavez driving in two runs.
With the win, Cameron improves to 14-8 overall and 3-4 in LSC play, while TAMUK drops to 20-4 overall and 7-3 against league opponents.
The two teams will meet up again on Saturday for a doubleheader. Game one was schedule to begin at 1 p.m. but will now begin at 2 p.m. due to weather.
