LAWTON, Okla. – After winning game one of a three game series against No. 15 Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday night, the Cameron softball team dropped the doubleheader to the Javelinas on Saturday, 9-8 and 8-0.
The opening game of the day was a back and forth offensive battle. It started with the JAvelinas putting a four spot on the board in the top of the first thanks to a barrage of singles.
An inning later, the Aggies took their turn at a big inning, striking for three in the bottom of the second. An
Alyssa Osterdock two RBI single got things started to cut the deficit in half. Three batters and two outs later, Cameron head coach
Dennis Furr called the double-steal with Osterdock coming in to score while
Kaylyn Smith was caught in a run-down in between first and second.
The Javelinas answered with three runs of their own in the next half inning, scoring all three runs on RBI singles to give them a 7-3 lead. Cameron got one back in the bottom half of the third via a
Khmari Edwards solo homer, but still trailed 7-4 after three innings.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, before TAMUK added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth. Cameron quickly responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at eight.
Edwards came up big again, driving
Bethany Hines and Osterdock on a single to right center with just one out. Furr then called the double steal again, as
Brenna Busby came in to score with Edwards taking second. The fourth run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly to centerfield from
Callie Busby to drive in Edwards.
Texas A&M-Kingsville and Cameron both went scoreless in the seventh inning, forcing extras. In the top of the eighth, TAMUK got three straight two-out singles to take a 9-8 lead. CU was unable to threaten in the bottom half, securing the Javelinas' 21st win.
Both pitching staffs combined for seven strikeouts, while CU did not walk a batter in the game. Hines got the loss, falling to 6-5 on the season, while Saidi Castillo received her 13th win of the season, despite giving up the game tying runs in the sixth.
Game two of the day was all Javelinas. The No. 15 ranked team in Division II went to Victoria Carrion in the circle and the junior delivered with a four-hit shutout in which she walked one and struck out four.
Breley Webb struggled for CU, giving up four earned runs, six total, on seven hits and four walks for her first loss of the season.
Kingsville scored two runs in the first, four in the third, and two more in the fifth to secure the run-rule win.
Edwards finished the doubleheader going 3-6 with three runs driven in and two runs scored, while
Kylie French, C. Busby, B. Busby, and Osterdock all added two hits.
Cameron is now 14-10 on the season and 3-6 against Lone Star Conference opponents. TAMUK improves to 22-4 with the pair of wins and are now 9-3 in league play.
The Aggies next test will be a three game series next weekend, March 15-16, when they visit Eastern New Mexico for a three game series in Portales, N.M.
