Busby, Warren, and Webb lead CU to sweep of Greyhounds

PORTALES, N.M. – The Cameron softball team won their first Lone Star Conference series of the season as they swept their doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, 6-2 and 11-3.

The Aggies got off to a fast start in game one, as Callie Busby drove in her sister on a groundout to second base in the top of the first.

Two innings later, Cameron added three more runs in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead. Breley Webb and C. Busby had back-to-back two-out hits to put two on for Abbey Warren. The senior then delivered a ball over the left field fence for her first homerun of the year.

After a scoreless fourth, the two teams matched one-run innings in both the fifth and sixth frames. Webb supplied a RBI double in the top of the fifth to bring in Khmari Edwards, and in the sixth, Brenna Busby delivered a RBI single to left center, driving in pinch runner Erycka Pierce.

Rylee Willmon provided Cameron with a solid effort in the circle, giving up just the two runs through seven innings. The senior hurler gave up just five hits, walked two, and struckout three for her fifth win of the season.

In the second game of the doubleheader, B. Busby led of the game with a walk and then came in to scored on a double-steal with Webb going from first to second after earning a walk herself.

Leading 1-0, Cameron added to that in the top of the second with three runs on three hits. Alyssa Osterdock doubled to lead off the inning, Kaylyn Smith singled with one out to put two runners on, and B. Busby walked to load the bases. Edwards drove in Osterdock on a sacrifice fly to center, and then Webb brought in B. Busby and Smith on a double to give CU the 4-0 lead.

Eastern New Mexico responded with three runs in their half of the second, but C. Busby quickly answered with a solo shot to leadoff the top of the third, putting the Black and Gold up by two.

The Aggies started to pull away in the fourth, as a wild pitch brought home Smith, who led off the inning with a single, and then back-to-back RBI singled from Webb and C. Busby increased the CU lead to 8-3.

Raley Long led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer, and then later in the inning, C. Busby and Warren delivered back-to-back RBI singles to give their team an eight run cushion.

The Greyhounds were able to put two runners on in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of singles, but Bethany Hines was able to get out of trouble and secure the run-rule win. Hines went all five innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks. She had four K's in her seventh win of the season.

C. Busby had a big day at the plate, going 5-7 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Webb and Warren both had four hits and four RBI of their own.

Cameron is now 17-10 on the season and moves to .500 at 6-6 in LSC play. The Greyhounds are now 10-13 overall and 6-9 against league opponents.

The Aggies have a quick turnaround as they host Northwestern Oklahoma State on Monday, March 18, for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at McMahon Field.
