CANYON, Texas – Cameron's baseball team almost matched their season home run total (six) with four long balls in a 12-10 loss to No. 6 West Texas A&M on Sunday.
The finale of the four-game series opened up as a pitching duel as the score was 1-0 in favor of WT after four innings of play.
Abel Rosario pitched a strong three innings for CU, striking out three while giving up just the one run (unearned) on three hits.
Cameron took the lead in the top of the fifth as
Briton Schiewe had one of his four hits on the day, a two-out, two-run homer to right field that brought in
Erik Ohman, who pinch-ran earlier in the inning.
That lead did not last long though, as the Buffs exploded for seven runs on six hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-2 lead.
Both teams scored single runs in the respective halves of the sixth, with CU's coming on an RBI double by
Pierce Khan.
Down by six, Cameron cut that deficit in half with three runs in the top of the seventh. With two outs already on the board, Schiewe reached on an infield singled and
Colton Adams walked to put two on for
Izrael Trevino. The CU first baseman launched his fourth homer of the season over the left field fence. The threat continued for more with CU loading the bases, but the Buffs got a much-needed strikeout to end the inning.
West Texas answered in the bottom of the eighth with three runs of their own to jump back out to a 12-6 lead, needing just three outs to complete the series sweep.
The Aggies would not go down quietly, as Trevino led off the ninth with a single up the middle. Following a strikeout by
Preston Allerheiligen, Khan added to his RBI total with a two-run homer to left center to cut the Buff lead to four.
Myles Miller followed that up with a single to right and then came in to score in the next at bat as
Hayden Jaco delivered a ball over the left centerfield fence to cut the deficit to just two. That is where CU's comeback ended as WT's Braden Baker struck out the final two hitters to secure the 12-10 win.
Schiewe, who did not start the game, went 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. He had a double, a homer, and two singles in the contest. Trevino was 2-5 with two runs scored and three driven in while Khan finished the game going 2-4 with a run scored and three RBI.
As a team, despite recording 12 hits, the Aggies struck out 15 times and left eight runners on base.
Cameron falls to 9-16 overall as the Buffs improve to 21-3 overall. The two teams will meet again at the end of the regular season for a Lone Star Conference four-game series, May 3-5.
The Aggies will continue their road stretch next weekend as they visit Tarleton State for four games, March 22-24. The series in Stephenville, Texas will officially begin conference play for CU.
