Week 9 Recap:Â
Cameron entered the final week of the regular season needing to finish tied or one game ahead of MSU Texas to claim the final spot in the tournament. They put that narrative to rest on Thursday, as they came away with a 65-61 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville. That win paired with a Mustang loss to Angelo State clinched a berth in the LSC postseason for the Black and Gold. Against TAMUK, Cameron forced 22 turnovers and went to the foul line 29 times in the winning effort. Dumas led the Aggies with 18 points, going 9-10 from the charity stripe. Nicholas added 12 points for CU, while Momoh and
Brock Schreiner each chipped in 10. Two days later, the Aggies lost 78-58 to the Rams in the regular season finale. The home team Ags shot just 39 percent from the field and, uncharacteristically, turned the ball over 16 times and made just 11 trips to the foul line. Momoh had a team-high 15 points in his final game at the Aggie Gym, while Schreiner added 13 points to add to his impressive rookie campaign. Â
This Season Against WT:
Cameron dropped both meetings against WT this season. In the first matchup on Nov. 29, CU shot over 54 percent from the field, going 9-22 from three and 16-22 from the foul line. However, the home team Buffs made 14 three pointers and forced 16 turnovers, which led to 22 points. Gach Gach led the three-point barrage with 31 points and eight made treys. Ryan Quaid and Grant each chipped in double-digit scoring efforts in the 91-79 win. Dumas led CU with 25 points, going 8-11 from the field and 7-10 from the foul line, while both Momoh and
Johann Tate each added 13 points.Â
When the two teams met in Lawton, the Aggies fell behind 44-29 at the half after shooting just 28 percent in the first 20 minutes of play. Cameron stepped it up by shooting over 55 percent in the second frame and outscoring WT 41-39, but it was not enough in the 83-70 loss. Grant led WT with 22 points, while four others scored in double-figures. Momoh scored a career-best 27 points, going 11-17 from the field, and Nicholas added a 10 point, 11 rebound double-double.Â
The All-Time Series:
West Texas A&M holds the all-times series lead over the Aggies 36-16. The Buffs have won six straight in the series, after a stretch that saw CU win seven out of 12 from 2012 to 2016. The two teams have met five times in the postseason with WT winning four out of the five.
1990 West Texas A&M 66, Cameron 58
1991 West Texas A&M 78, Cameron 70
2011 West Texas A&M 75, Cameron 59
2013 West Texas A&M 65, Cameron 50
2016 Cameron 79, West Texas A&M 70
CU in the Tournament:
Cameron is 5-14 all time in the LSC Tournament entering their eighth straight year of postseason play. Last season, CU lost a 63-49 contest to Tarleton State in the opening round. The Black and Gold's last win in the postseason came in 2016 when the then No. 5 seed Aggies took down the No. 4 seed Buffs 79-70;
Tyus Momoh and
Tyler Williams were the only current Aggies on that team. That was the second straight first round win by CU, as they took down MSU in the opening round of the 2015 tournament. Cameron just has five wins all-time in the LSC tournament and have yet to reach a final.Â
Against the Bracket:
Even though Cameron is 0-2 this season against WT, if they were to win their first round matchup, they would face the winner of the Eastern New Mexico/Tarleton State game. CU went 0-2 against the Texans in 2018-19, while splitting the series against the Greyhounds with an 88-84 win in Lawton. On the other side of the bracket lies Angelo State, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas A&M-Commerce, and UT Permian Basin. The Aggies split the season series with both ASU and the Javelinas, while losing both games this year against UTPB and the Lions.Â
Lone Star Conference Honors:
A pair of Aggies were honored on Thursday night, when the league announced the all-academic and all-conference teams at the annual postseason banquet. Momoh and
Cole Lehr were two of five men's basketball players named to the LSC All-Academic team, as both players own a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better. Momoh was also named to the All-LSC second team after ranking top-10 in the conference in points, assists, and steals during his senior campaign.Â
