Game Recap: Softball |

Busby homers twice in twinbill split with No. 8 Texas A&M-Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas – The Cameron softball team split their final two games of the regular season, beating No. 8 Texas A&M-Commerce 5-1 in game one and then falling 11-3 in the second game.

Brenna Busby got game one started with a bang, hitting a leadoff home run to give CU an early 1-0 lead. However, the Lions quickly erased that with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game.

In the fifth, Khmari Edwards drove in B. Busby on a double to left center to put the Aggies back up and then a throwing error by the TAMUC catcher in the sixth allowed Callie Busby to come in to score after stealing third base.

The Aggies then added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh thanks to a two-run bomb from B. Busby, her 43rd of her career, giving her team a 5-1 advantage; Busby is just two homers shy of the CU career record.

Bethany Hines pitched a gem for the Black and Gold, giving up just the one run on six hits and a walk. The junior also struck out eight batters in her 14th win of the season.

B. Busby finished the game going 2-2 with three runs scored and three RBI, while her sister, C. Busby went 2-3 with one run scored.

Game two went the way of the Lions from the start. The home team scored four runs in the first inning and then one more in both the second and the third to take a 6-0 lead.

Cameron cut that lead in half with a three run fourth inning. B. Busby added to her strong day at the plate, hitting a single to left that brought home Alyssa Osterdock. Two batters later, C. Busby reached on a fielding error by the TAMUC first baseman, which allowed both B. Busby and Kaylyn Smith to score.

Texas A&M-Commerce's offense could not be contained in game two, as they scored another run in the bottom of the fourth and then four more on a grand slam by Kinsie Hebler in the fifth to end the game via the run-rule, 11-3.

CU had five hits from five separate players in the second game, with B. Busby providing the only RBI; the team left eight runners on base.

The split gives Cameron a final regular season record of 33-14 and a conference mark of 20-10. The finish tied for fourth with Tarleton State, who holds the tiebreaker over them after winning the season series two games to one.

CU and Tarleton State will match up in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Championship, which will be held in Kingsville, Texas, May 3-4. They will play the first round game on Friday at 1:30 p.m. If CU wins that, they will play in the semifinal against the host and No. 1 seed Texas A&M-Kingsville at 6:30 later that day. The LSC Championship final will be held Saturday, May 4, at 2 p.m.
