KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Cameron softball team was held to just two hits in the second quarterfinal of the Lone Star Conference Championship, falling to No. 19 Tarleton State 2-0.
The Aggie bats were silenced by Jordan Withrow, who gave up just the two hits while walking two and striking out five in her 21st win of the season.
Bethany Hines put together a solid outing herself, giving up two runs on eight hits and two walks. She also struck out six during her 5.2 innings of work.
Rylee Willmon came in to record the last out of the sixth and struck out the only batter she faced. The duo combined to strand eight TSU runners on base.
CU's first hit of the game came in the top of the third as
Kaylyn Smith hit bunt single to the right side, putting runners on first and second with only one out. However, the top of the CU order was unable to bring in a run, ending the threat.
The two-run bottom of the third inning was the deciding factor in the game as a pair of singles and a walk set the table for the TexAnns to bring home a pair.
In the top of the seventh, the Aggies put some pressure on the TexAnns once again, as a walk by
Callie Busby and a single off the bat of
Kylie French put two runners on to lead off the inning.
After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base, a groundout to third by
Raley Long was fielded and thrown home to throw out Busby trying to score. On the same play, Long left the field of play, thinking she was out, and was called out to end the game.
The Aggies are now 33-15 on the season, while Tarleton improves to 39-12, and will face the tournament host and No. 1 seed Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.
Cameron is ranked No. 5 in the South Central Regional Rankings. The postseason schedule will be announced during the selection show for the NCAA Division II Softball Tournament, which will be Monday, May 6, at 9 a.m. (CT) on NCAA.com.
