COMMERCE, Texas – The Cameron University softball battled in another pitcher's duel to open up the Division II South Central Region 2 Tournament against No. 19 Tarleton on Thursday, bell fell 2-1 on a walk-off hit by the TexAnns.
Like their first round matchup in the Lone Star Star Conference Tournament, the game featured strong outings in the circle from both
Bethany Hines and Jordan Withrow.
After two scoreless innings, the TexAnns took the first lead of the game with a run on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the third.
A half inning later, the Aggies answered with a run of their own to tie the game. A
Breley Webb double with one out set the table and a
Callie Busby single put a pair of runners on for
Kylie French. CU head coach
Dennis Furr decided to play small ball, with French bunting to move the runners over. However, a fielder's choice allowed her to reach and a throwing error by the TSU third baseman brought Webb in to score.
Cameron, who tallied just two hits against Withrow a week ago, recorded five on Thursday, but left six runners on base including two in the sixth inning after Webb and C. Busby reached to lead off the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Hines walked pinch hitter Kayden Kirkpatrick, who was then lifted for the same player she came in to hit for, Morgan Ling. Ling advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, setting the table for the dangerous Georgia Capell. Â CU intentionally walked Capell for the second time in the game, leading to Tanna Huie singling to right field and driving in Ling to end the game.
Hines gave up just the one run on three hits and three walks in her 5.1 innings in the circle.
Rylee Willmon gave up the other run on just one hit and a walk in her 1.1 innings of work.
Withrow was not as dominant as she was in the LSC game, but did the job for the TexAnns, giving up just one unearned run on five hits and three walks. She also struck out three batters in her 22nd win of the year.
Webb finished the game with a 1-1 line with one run scored, while C. Busby recorded two of the Aggies five hits.
Cameron, now 33-16 on the season, will move on to the loser's bracket and face the loser of the Texas A&M-Commerce/Dixie State game on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
