Baseball suffers walk-off loss in series finale

ODESSA, Texas – Despite another strong outing from Hayden Jaco, the Aggie baseball team was unable to stop a ninth inning comeback by UT Permian Basin, falling in the series finale 2-1.

As opposed to the first three games of the series in which CU and the Falcons combined for 54 runs, Sunday's finale was a pitcher's duel between Jaco and a trio of UTPB pitchers.

Cameron scored the first run of the game, as a wild pitch allowed Izrael Trevino to score after being hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. CU recorded eight hits in the game but stranded nine Aggies on the base paths, going 0-9 with runners in scoring position. Fortunately, for CU, the one run was looking like all they would need.

Just a week after throwing a no-hitter, Jaco carried a three-hit shutout into the bottom of the ninth. However, the senior got into trouble in the final frame, as a hit batter, a fielding error, and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs. CU intentionally walked the next batter to load the bases.

Jaco was able to get Tyler Frailey to hit into a fielder's choice as Pierce Khan threw out the runner from third at home.  Skyler Palmero came up to the plate and singled to left field, bringing two runners home and winning the game for UTPB.

Khan and Myles Miller each had a pair of hits for the Black and Gold, while the other four hits were spread out between four other CU batters.

Jaco's final line consisted of him giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk. He also struck out four batters in his third loss of the season.

Cameron is now 20-25 on the year and 11-9 in Lone Star Conference play after losing the four-game series three games to one.

The Aggies will wrap up the regular season by hosting a ranked West Texas A&M team for a four-game set next weekend, May 3-5.
