KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Aggie softball team struggled defensively in the opening game of the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regional on Thursday night, committing eight errors in the 12-8 loss to No. 3 Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Cameron had the better offensive numbers in the best of three series, but the defensive miscues led to nine unearned runs to come in to score for the Javelinas, who had just nine hits in the contest. CU struck for 12 hits at the plate and stranded four runners on base.
In the opening game of the series, it was the Black and Gold who struck first as
Abbey Warren drove in
Kylie French and
Callie Busby on a double in the second inning.
Texas A&M-Kingsville answered with a single run in the second and then scored nine in the third inning on six hits and three errors to take a 10-2 lead.
The Aggies quickly answered with five runs in the top of the fourth to get back to within three runs. Six singles in the first seven at bats of the frame resulted in four runs to cross the plate. C. Busby added the fifth on a sacrifice fly that brought her sister
Brenna Busby home from third.
Warren tallied her third hit of the game with one out in the fifth and, after stealing third base, came in to score on a throwing error by TAMUK to get her team to within one run.
Kingsville added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth and in the next half inning got out of a bases loaded, one-out situation to keep the score at 12-8. They recorded three straight outs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
Warren led the Aggies with a 3-4 game, driving in two runs and scoring a pair as well. Freshmen
Khmari Edwards and French also had two hit outings in the loss.
Despite giving up just three earned runs,
Bethany Hines received the loss, allowing eight hits and four walks while striking out just one batter in her four innings in the circle.
Rylee Willmon threw two one-hit innings to finish out the contest.
The Aggies, who were in a similar situation just a week ago, will need to win two games against the Javelinas on Friday to keep their season alive and advance to the College World Series.
