Vines throws gem, Cameron advances with 9-0 win

CANYON, Texas – The Aggie baseball had no trouble advancing to the next round of the Lone Star Conference Championship presented by Under Armour behind a pitching gem from Gaige Vines and a nine-run offensive outburst.

The junior from Trophy Club, Texas saved one of his best outings of the season for the postseason, going 8.1 innings, giving up just six hits and walking two. He allowed no runs and struck out six in his sixth win of the year.

Sean Maher came in to clean things up in the ninth.

Vines' run support came early and often on Friday. Cameron scored two runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Myles Miller and Hayden Jaco allowed Pierce Khan and Dillon Turney to score and give CU the 2-0 lead.

Cameron's big inning came in the second, where they scored four runs to extend their lead to 6-0. Khan got in on the action with a two RBI single through the left side that brought home Trey Bigford. Turney then reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error allowed Jaylayn Prince to score from third. Izrael Trevino brought home Turney on a double off the left field wall and then scored on a single by Miller.

In the third, Khan added to his impressive day with a two RBI single through the right side that gave his team and eight run advantage.

CU's ninth and final run came in the seventh, as Jaco and Briton Schiewe pulled off a double steal with the throw down to third base going into left field, allowing Jaco to trot home.

Khan led the Aggies with a 4-5 day, scoring one run and driving in three more. Miller added a pair of hits and two RBI, while Jaco had two hits and one run driven in for the Black and Gold.

Next up for Cameron will be the top seed and No. 1 ranked Angelo State, who they will face in the LSC Championship semifinal Friday, May 10, at 3 p.m.
