LAWTON, Okla. – The Aggie volleyball team opened up conference season with a three-set sweep of rival Midwestern State on Friday night.
Cameron had one of their best nights on the attack, hitting over .300 in both the first and second sets. They also had a trio of service aces and won the block battle 8-7.
Sarah Wright led the way for the Black and Gold on offense. The sophomore had a team-high 14 kills and hit .429 with only two errors. She also had one of CU's service aces while
Katherine Manning and
Arianna Navarrete had the others.
Navarrete was the only other Aggie with double-figure kills as the freshman had 11 on a .172 hitting percentage. Manning had 22 assists for CU, while
Desiree Marmolejo added 16 helpers.
Caitlyn Henderson led the charge at the net with six total blocks, while
Walia Franklin added five. Additionally, libero
Peyton Little led the team with 19 digs in CU's first home match.
Fueled by the rowdy Aggie faithful, Cameron took control of the first set following a 6-0 run that put them up 13-8. They used a pair of late four-point rallies to secure the 25-17 set win.
The Aggies carried that momentum into set two, rattling off six straight points to start the frame. CU held off a few MSU comebacks to win the second 25-18 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Midwestern State led for most of the third set, taking a 13-9 lead on a kill by Sarah Eakin. However, CU battled back and a Wright kill gave them their first lead of the frame at 18-17. The two teams traded scores until CU took hit set-point with a 24-22 lead. MSU battled back to tie the match at 24 and after trading scores, a kill by Wright and a Mustang error secured the 27-25 win for the Aggies.
Cameron is now 4-5 on the season and 1-0 in Lone Star Conference play thanks to the divisional win over MSU.
The Aggies are back in the Aggie Gym on Saturday as they host Texas Woman's for a match scheduled for 2 p.m.
