FORT SMITH, Ark. – The Aggie volleyball team suffered their second loss to the University of Arkansas Fort Smith Lady Lions in the span of four days, falling 3-0 on Friday evening.
Cameron never got in a rhythm in their second go around against the Lady Lions this week, despite hitting .216 on the attack, which was their third highest percentage on the season. Usually a strong team on the block and the service line, the Aggies totaled just one service ace and four total bocks in the three set match, compared to UAFS's eight aces and six blocks, which paired with their .351 hitting percentage led to the big win.
Riana Blount and
Walia Franklin each had seven kills to lead the Black and Gold and combined for just one attack error in the match. Blount also added a team-high three blocks while Franklin recorded two blocks.
Desiree Marmolejo and
Katherine Manning combined for 28 assists and libero
Peyton Little led CU with 13 digs on Friday night.
The Aggies hung with UAFS for most of the first set, as there were multiple lead changes and ties in the first 37 points scored. Already up 19-18, the Lady Lions used a 3-0 run to extend their lead to four. A 2-1 CU rally set the score at 23-20, but the home team recorded a pair of kills in the next two plays to secure the 25-20 win.
UAFS led the second frame from the start. It was not until a 5-1 run late in the set got Cameron to within three points of their opponent at 22-19. However, the Lady Lions answered with a 3-1 run of their own to win another 25-20 set.
Cameron opened up set three with a 3-1 lead, but UAFS quickly answered with a 7-1 stretch to jump out to an 8-4 advantage. The Aggies came back to get within two thanks to kills from Blount and Franklin, but that was as close as they would get, as the Lady Lions used a .360 attack percentage to win the frame 25-17 and secure their second win over CU.
The Aggies third straight loss and second straight to UAFS put their season record at 4-8. They are also 1-3 in both the Lone Star Conference and their division.
Next weekend Cameron will play their first two non-divisional conference matches as they visit Tarleton on Friday, Oct. 4, and DBU on Saturday, Oct. 5. Â
