WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Cameron men's basketball team held on for a tough 76-73 win over Red River rival Midwestern State thanks to a pair of game securing free throws by
Hunter Quick and a combined 35 points from
Brock Schreiner and
Jordan Lewis.
The Aggies shot a season-high 50 points in their win over the Mustangs while going 6-14 from three-point range and 18-27 from the charity stripe. They turned the ball over 15 times compared to MSU's six, resulting in 14 points for their opponents. Like they have all season, Cameron controlled the rebounding battle 42-35, but the Mustangs had five more offensive boards than the Black and Gold.
Schreiner scored a game-high 20 points to lead CU to the division victory. The sophomore was 8-14 from the field, 2-5 from three, and 2-5 from the free throw line while adding five rebounds and four assists for the Black and Gold.
Lewis added 15 points to the winning effort as the senior was a perfect 5-5 from the field and 4-4 from three-point range. His only miss was at the foul line as he was 1-2 for the game. Additionally, senior
Jalen Nicholas fell one-point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs scored the first points of the game, which was answered by an 8-0 run by the Black and Gold that gave them a six-point advantage that the quickly extended to 11-4, their largest lead of the frame. A 9-2 stretch in favor of MSU erased CU's lead and tied the game at 13 with a pair of free throws at the 13:41 mark. A few minutes later, the Mustangs were able to take a five-point lead on a Reggie Rivera three. Cameron answered with a 9-0 run to take back the lead and go up 28-24 with 5:37 left in the half. They held the lead the rest of the half and held a 37-34 advantage at the break.
Cameron shot 55.6 percent from the field in the half, going 4-8 from three and 3-4 from the charity stripe. Turnovers plagued the Black and Gold, as they gave the ball away 11 times in the first 20 minutes of action, which resulted in 12 points for MSU.
Lewis led all scorers with 11 points, going a perfect 4- from the field and 3-3 from long range in the first half. Schreiner added 10 points on 4-6 shooting for the Aggies. Rivera had an MSU-high eight points at the break.
The Aggies were on fire to start the second half, using an early 11-0 run to extend their lead to 50-38 six minutes into the frame. MSU was able to put a stop to the CU, who then went on a two-minute scoring drought that allowed the opposition to get to within five with just over 10 minutes to play. A scoring stretch from
Jalen Nicholas was able to keep the Mustangs at arm's length for a while, but three pointer by Daniel Mosely and free throws from Darius Thompson tied the game at 59 with 6:16 on the clock.
Cameron went on a 9-2 run that was capped by Lewis' fourth three of the night to give them a 68-61 lead with just over three minutes to play.
JeMarcus Caldwell hit a pair of foul shots to extend the lead to nine but MSU responded with a pair of three-pointers to cut it back down to three with 1:47 on the clock.
After battling back and forth in the final minute, MSU got an offensive rebound, down three with four seconds on the clock, from Ola Ayodele, who put it back for two and was fouled, giving him a chance to tie the game with a made free throw. The senior missed the foul shot, which was rebounded by CU's
Hunter Quick, who made his two free throws after being fouled to secure the 76-73 Aggie win.
Midwestern State was held under 40 percent shooting from the field while they went just 7-25 from three and made 14 of their 22 foul shots. Senior Darius Thompson was the only Mustang in double-figures with 19 points.
Cameron moves into sole possession of third place in the division standings at 2-1, while improving to 4-11 overall and 3-6 in league play. They will meet up again with the rival Mustangs on Saturday, Jan. 18, this time in the friendly confines of the Aggie Gym at 4 p.m.
