LAWTON -- Cameron men's basketball looks for their first win of the 2020-21 season as they hit the road to face UT Permian Basin for a pair of back-to-back contests.
STARTING 5:
1. In their opening weekend against Midwestern State, the Aggies found themselves behind in both games, trailing for a majority of Friday's contest and then not leading at all during Saturday's game; Cameron was able to get within three points of MSU in the series finale, but fell by five.
2.
Kendall Scott recorded his fifth career double-double in Saturday's game, scoring a game-high 22 points while grabbing 13 rebounds; he is currently 10th in scoring (15.0) and tied for first in rebounding (10.0) in the Lone Star Conference through one week of play.
3. Five of Cameron's six freshman saw action during the first two games of the season, with
Marques Warrior Jr. averaging 9.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists and
Kino Thompson averaging 8.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 steals against the Mustangs.
4. Last week, UT Permian Basin's head coach Josh Newman recorded his 200th NCAA career win; Newman spent nine seasons at UAFS prior to coming to UTPB in 2018 and has a 12-year record of 201-131.
5. Senior Jordan Horn exploded for 32 points and went 7-7 from the free throw line in the Falcon's 96-78 win over Western New Mexico on Tuesday.
LAST TIME OUT:
After a tough season opener against Midwestern State on Friday, the Cameron men had to overcome a couple of double-digit deficits against the Mustangs in the series finale on Saturday. CU trailed by 14 with under 10 minutes to play in the second half and was able to get to within three with 11 seconds left, but the comeback fell short. Scott led the Black and Gold with his 22 point, 13 rebounds double-double, while
Brock Schreiner added 14 points and
Connor Slater had 10 points and seven boards off the bench.
ABOUT THE AGGIES:
Cameron played a pair of tough games against Midwestern State to open their new campaign, losing the first one 98-75 and then the second 75-70. The Aggies shot 40.5 percent from the field for the series while going 18-14 from long-range and making 71.4 percent at the free throw line. They were out-matched by the Mustangs on the boards with them averaging 10.5 less rebounds than their opponent. Turnovers were also a problem for CU, as they gave the ball away 17.5 times per game, leading to an average of 23.5 points for MSU.
Individually, Scott averaged 15.0 points and 10.0 rebounds against the Mustangs, while shooting 48 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three. Schreiner averaged 12.5 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals against CU's rival and freshman
Marques Warrior Jr. debuted with an averaged of 9.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.0 steals during his first two collegiate games.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
UT Permian Basin enters the game with the Aggies with three wins on the young season, beating UT Tyler twice on opening weekend and then Western New Mexico on Tuesday. UTPB, who is always strong offensively, is averaging 84.7 points this season with a shooting percentage of 45.9 percent. They are also knocking down 9.0 trey balls and 20.3 free throws per outing at a 45 percent and 72 percent clip respectively. After his 32-point outing against WNMU, Horn is averaging 20.0 points and 5.3 rebounds to lead the Falcons, while Trevion Lamar is averaging 13.3 points and 7.3 rebounds. Additionally, Malik Brikat and Quinntez Grimes are both scoring in double-figures to start the 2020-21 season.
AGAINST UTPB:
CU and UTPB have one of the shortest rivalries among Lone Star Conference opponents, and recently the series had been controlled by the Falcons. Permian Basin has won five straight against the Aggies, including an 89-77 win in Odessa, Texas last season. Cameron shot just 24.1 percent from three in that meeting, with
Darius Green leading the Black and Gold with 16 points off the bench.
WHO HAS NEXT:
Following their mandated winter break, Cameron will face their first North Division foe in Dallas Baptist. CU will travel to DBU on Saturday, Jan. 2 and then host the Patriots on Monday, Jan. 4.
