Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cameron keeps it rollin, wins fourth straight

LAWTON, Okla.-- The Cameron Aggie women's basketball team stays red hot with a dominating 68-50 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville, their fourth straight victory.

Cameron entered the week on a two-game win streak, and after beating Texas A&M International on Thursday and then the Javelinas on Saturday, they have now won fourth straight for the first time since January of 2016.

In the first quarter, the Aggies got out to another hot start offensively. The team nailed a trio of triples before the halfway point of the frame. Stephanie Peterson, Karley Miller, and Ava Battese all drained threes by that point, which was just the start of a balanced scoring effort from CU that saw five Aggies scored in double figures in the contest.

Midway through the first quarter, Whitney Outon already accrued three blocks. Anchoring the CU defense inside helped limit the Javelinas to just six points with five minutes left in the frame.

By the end of the first ten minutes of action, seven Aggies had already produced points, with Maighan Hedge leading the way with five. The Black and Gold were shooting 50 percent from both the field and from three-point range.

Midway through the second frame, the Aggies built an 18-point cushion, and never looked back. Redshirt-freshman Julie Shalkowski provided a lift off the Black and Gold bench to keep the offense in high gear with the second unit, as she knocked down a pair of triples in the second quarter.

CU head coach Emma Andrews spoke highly of Shalkowki saying "You always love seeing a kid who has not had an opportunity yet, get an opportunity. I think you can tell on the rest of our teams' faces, on mine, and on hers, that it is an exciting time."

The three-point shooting never cooled off for Cameron, who eventually saw 11 triples go through the bottom of the net on Saturday. Hedge and Battese led the way with four and three made long balls respectively. Hedge finished the game with a game-high 26 points, her sixth 20-plus point game in the last seven CU contests, and Battese added 14 points.

Stephanie Peterson played valuable minutes off the CU bench once again, going for five points, six assists, and nine rebounds. The freshman wing was a plus 13 when she was on the floor and controlled the pace for much of the contest.

After hitting 11 triples and winning the rebounding battle 49-41, coach Andrews continued to talk about late January being when this team would find their stride. "I am excited to see where this team can take it, and how far they can go as they find themselves."

Now that CU has won four in a row, Andrews explained, "I told my girls we have painted a target on our backs. That does not mean you work less, but you must work even harder now. Our focus next week is to just work harder."

The win improves Cameron's overall record to 9-11 while moving to two-games above .500 at 8-6 in league play, which puts them in seventh place in the Lone Star Conference standings.

Next week, Cameron hits the road to try and build on their four-game winning streak. They visit Texas Woman's on Thursday, Feb. 6, and then Tarleton on Saturday, Feb. 8. "These will be two tough road games and keeping our confidence high in each other will be a big deal."
