SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Cameron women's tennis team started their spring season with a pair of losses this weekend, falling to Drury and No. 20 Washburn in a pair of 4-3 matches.
Match 1 – Drury 4, Cameron 3
In Friday night's match against the Drury Panthers, Cameron started off the match down 1-0 after losing in two of the three doubles contests. CU's lone win came at the three spot, where
Julianne Garcia and
Alisa Savina winning 6-4 over their DU opponents.
The doubles decision would end up being the deciding factor as the two teams split the six singles matches. The Aggies three wins came at the top of the lineup in the one, two, and three matches. Sophomore
Vasilisa Polunova won her match at No. 1 6-4, 4-6, 7-3 and freshman
Alex Lopez defeated her opponent 6-2, 7-5 in the No. 2 match. Cameron's third win came from
Melany Opolz, as she defeated her Panther counterpart 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. All three of CU's singles losses came in two sets.
Match 2 – No. 20 Washburn 4, Cameron 3
Saturday afternoon the Aggies faced off against the No. 20 ranked Washburn Ichabods. Unlike their match against Druy, CU opened the contest up 1-0 by winning all three doubles battles. Garcia and Savina had a dominant 6-1 win at three, while Lopez and Opolz won 6-2 in the No. 2 match and Polunova and
Pilar Jaurena earned a 6-4 win in the top spot over the No. 22 ranked duo of Logan Morriessey and Svea Crohn.
In singles, Cameron's only two wins came from their two upper classmen Opolz and Savina. In the No. 3 singles match, the junior Opolz outlast her opponent 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 and at No. 4 Savina won 6-2, 6-3 for CU's third and final point of the match. Of the Aggies' four singles losses, three came in just two sets, with Polunova taking her opponent at No. 1 to three sets and losing 7-6, 1-6, 6-3. Â

Cameron's next match will be an exhibition at home against Seward County CC on Feb. 14. They then visit the always tough Northeastern State Riverhawks on Feb. 15.
