Game Notes
LAWTON – After almost two weeks away from competition, the Cameron men's basketball team are back in action for two games against UAFS, playing game one in Aggie Gym on Thursday, Jan. 21, and game two in Fort Smith, Ark. on Saturday, Jan. 23.
STARTING 5:
1. After the week against Oklahoma Christian, the Aggies have played five games that were decided by five or less points, with one of those going the way of CU and the other four ending in losses.
2.
Brock Schreiner notched his fourth 20-plus point outing last time out, scoring 21 points in the overtime loss; the junior guard is averaging 20.4 points per game and ranks sixth in the Lone Star Conference and 36th in all of NCAA Division II.
3. Junior forward
Kendall Scott recorded his third double-double of the season against OC, putting him in second place in the conference and seventh nationally in that category; he is averaging 11.6 points and 8.6 rebounds this season.
4. UAFS head coach Jim Boone is in his second season at the school and 35th overall with well over 550 coaching wins on his NCAA career resume.
5. The Lions' senior forward Chris Rollins is tied with CU's Scott with three double-doubles this season, as the Akron, Ala. native is averaging 18.5 points and 8.8 rebounds while shooting 65 percent from the field so far this season.
LAST TIME OUT:
For the fourth time this season, the Cameron men lost a game by less than five points when they fell to Oklahoma Christian, 75-73, in overtime last time out. The two teams were evenly matched the whole game, but CU's lack of ability to get to the foul line (5-9 free throw attempts) cost them down the stretch when they were outscored 11-9 in the final five minutes of action. Schreiner led the way with 21 points on 20 shots attempts, making four three pointers in the loss. Scott added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and
Dalton Vinson chipped in 10 points off the bench.
ABOUT THE AGGIES:
Cameron had almost two weeks to regroup after splitting a pair of close games against OC on Jan. 7 and Jan. 9. Now 1-7 on the season and 1-3 in division play, the Black and Gold are averaging 78 points on the offensive end, but are also giving up 88.6 on defense. CU makes 8.6 three-pointers per game at a 36 percent clip, which is fifth best in the LSC, and is making their 13.4 foul shots per outing at a 71 percent clip. Cameron's rebounding has been strong through eight games, averaging 37.8 boards per contest with 12.1 of those coming on the offensive end (ranks third in the league). Turnovers have been a battle for CU, as they give the ball away over 16 times per outing, which results in an average of 20 points for their opponents. Schreiner (20.4) and Scott (11.6) are the only Aggies scoring over 10 points per night, while
Marques Warrior Jr.,
Connor Slater, and
Andrew Nguyen are all scoring over 8.0 points per game for CU. Warrior also leads the team with 1.1 steals and 2.8 assists per outing, while Slater averages 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 points to go along with his scoring numbers.
SCOUTING THE LIONS:
UAFS has started the season 2-4 overall and 1-1 against LSC North Division opponents. They opened the season with a pair of losses to Texas A&M-Kingsville and then split their last two series against UT Permian Basin and Texas A&M-Commerce. The Lions have lacked in putting up points, but earn their 68.8 points per game efficiently, shooting over 45 percent from the field. They do not take a lot of three-point shots (5.5 made per game), but do excel at the foul line (16.0 made free throws per game at a 70 percent clip). Defensively, the give up an average of 78 points to their opposition and average just 3.5 steals and 1.7 blocks per outing. UAFS is led by Rollins and his 18.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, while senior guard Matthew Wilson averaged 15.3 points and 3.5 assists and freshman Payton Brown averaged 14 points per contest.
AGAINST UAFS:
In the short all-time series history, the CU men have won three of the four meetings against UAFS. The two games last season between the teams were hard fought wins by the Black and Gold. In Fort Smith, the Lions surged to a 41-32 lead at the half, but the Aggies bounced back with a 38-27 second half to win 70-68. Schreiner led CU with 24 points, while Wilson and Rollins combined for 26 points for the Lions. Later in the season, it was the Aggies who held a 13-point lead at the half and withstood a 50 point half by UAFS in the second 20 minutes to win 88-80. Scott had the hot hand for CU, scoring 20 points on 80 percent shooting, while Wilson had 21 points for the Lions.
WHO HAS NEXT:
After three straight weeks of division games, the Cameron men are back to crossover play next week when they visit Texas A&M-Kingsville for a pair of contests on Jan. 29-30 in Kingsville, Texas. The series against the Javelinas is the first of four straight crossover back-to-backs for the Black and Gold.
