LAWTON – The Cameron men's basketball team will be looking for a pair of big upsets when they visit No. 22 Texas A&M-Kingsville this weekend for Lone Star Conference crossover action.
STARTING 5:
1. With their loss to UAFS last time out, the Aggie men are 1-8 overall and 1-4 in Lone Star Conference North Division play to start the season, which has them at them bottom of the league in terms of the new point ranking system (1.94 points).
2. Junior guard
Brock Schreiner ranks fifth in the LSC in scoring (20.3) and is one of only five players in the league scoring over 20 points per game; he is also fifth in free throw shooting (.909) and eighth in three-point field goals per game (2.5).
3. CU sophomore forward
Connor Slater's 11 points against UAFS pumped his scoring average to 8.8 on the season, which is fourth best on the Aggie squad; the Elgin, Okla. native is shooting over 50 percent from the field and from three.
4. Now in his seventh season at his alma mater, Texas A&M-Kingsville head coach Johnny Estelle has his Javelinas ranked No. 22 in the NABC Division II Rankings with a 9-1 record to start the 2020-21 season.
5. TAMUK is a defensive-first team, ranking in the top-3 in the LSC in scoring defense (63.4), field goal defense (.414), three-point defense (.274), and turnovers forced (17.6 per game).
LAST TIME OUT:
Cameron was able to play the first game of their home-and-home series against UAFS last Thursday, but fell to the hot-shooting Lions, 85-76 in front of their home fans. UAFS shot over 57 percent from the field and were 10-19 from long range, led by freshman Payton Brown's 38-point effort. Cameron outscored their opponent from Arkansas 42-38 in the second half, but it was not enough to complete the once 18-point comeback. Schreiner had 19 points on 15 shots for CU, while Slater had 11 and
Kendall Scott had 10.
ABOUT THE AGGIES:
Last week, the Aggies had just one shot to take down UAFS, as the second game of the series was postponed, leaving them with a 1-8 record through nine games. Scoring hasn't been a problem for the Black and Gold, as they average 77.8 points per game while shooting 43 percent from the field and 34 percent from three. Where CU has struggled is on the defensive end, where they rank last in the LSC in scoring defense (88.2) and second to last in field goal defense (.491). Schreiner leads the way offensively for the Aggies, scoring 20.3 points per game to go along with 2.8 assists and 3.1 rebounds. Scott is averaging just shy of a double-double with 11.4 points and 8.2 rebounds, while
Marques Warrior Jr. (9.2), Slater (8.8), and
Andrew Nguyen (8.0) all average over eight points for CU.
SCOUTING THE JAVELINAS:
Texas A&M-Kingsville has not only been one of the best teams in the LSC to start the 2020-21 season, but they are one of the best in all of Division II. They are averaging just under 77 points per game while shooting an efficient 44.4 percent from the field. On average 10.1 of their made shots come from behind the three-point arc, while they get 14.0 points from the foul line. Their defensive prowess limits teams to just 63.4 points per game while turning the ball over 17.6 times on average which results in 22.4 points off turnovers for the Javelinas. TAMUK has a duo of players scoring over 10 points per game in junior guards Creighton Avery and Jordan Wilson. Avery is averaging 13.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.4 steals for TAMUK, while Wilson averages 10.7 points and 4.1 rebounds.
AGAINST TAMUK:
In recent history, the series between Cameron and the Javelinas has been almost even, but last season's matchup went the way of TAMUK. In their lone meeting a year ago, the two teams combined for 177 points in a 92-85 Javelina win. They opened the game leading 47-25 at halftime, and then withstood a 60-point second half by the Aggies to earn the win. Tre Flowers had 19 points on 5-10 shooting to lead Kingsville, who made 22 free throws and 11 triples as a team. Schreiner led CU with a near triple-double (22 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists), and
Darius Green added 20 points on 7-9 shooting. Cameron made seven triples and 17 free throws while shooting 43 percent from the floor.
