ODESSA, Texas – The Cameron volleyball team did not have an answer for the UT Permian Basin attack on Saturday, falling in straight sets for their 19th straight loss.
The Aggies began their weekend road trip out west on Thursday against Western New Mexico, and despite winning the first set, out-blocking, and out-hitting the Mustangs, they were unable to secure their first conference win. They faced a much tougher opponent on Saturday at UTPB.
UT Permian Basin were right at home in the Falcon dome, hitting .340 with 41 kills, nine service aces, and seven blocks. On the other side of the court, Cameron was held to an .077 clip on the attack, no aces, and just three blocks (the Aggies average around two blocks per set this season).
Caitlyn Henderson had one of the most efficient matches by an Aggie this season, recording seven kills on 11 attacks with no errors, good for a .636 hitting percentage.
Arianna Navarrete also had seven kills to go along with her seven digs and one block.
Desiree Marmolejo (11) and
Kendall Kilchrist (eight) combined for 19 assists from the setter position, while libero
Presley Shearin led the Black and Gold with 10 digs;
Jessica Lipkit provided two blocks for CU.
The Falcons started out the match with just one attacking error in the opening frame. They also added three aces and three blocks as the cruised to a 25-11 win. Cameron kept set two close, trailing by just two late, but the home team closed out the frame on a 7-1 run to win 25-17. In set three, UTPB used six aces to power their way to another 25-11 win to secure the sweep.
Cameron's 19th straight loss drops their overall record to 1-20 and their Lone Star Conference mark to 0-10. They will take another break from league play on Tuesday, Oct. 19, when they visit Northwestern Oklahoma State for a 7 p.m. match start. They then host Eastern New Mexico on Oct. 22 and West Texas A&M the next day.
