Aggies miss the mark against Hilltoppers

AUSTIN, Texas – The Cameron volleyball team began their final long road trip of the 2021 season with a straight-set loss to St. Edward's on Friday night.

The Aggies entered the weekend with just five matches left on the schedule including two this weekend in south Texas. Cameron opened the road trip against the Hilltoppers, who were on fire as they cruised to a three-set victory.

St. Edward's totaled 38 kills and hit .269 on the attack against the CU defense. The home team also collected 10 points from the service line and totaled 10 blocks for the match. On the other side of the court, the Black and Gold hit -.019 and had two aces and five blocks in the loss.

Arianna Navarrete led Cameron with seven kills, hitting .077 for the match. The third-year player was also responsible for six digs and an ace. Both Bergen Campbell and Anjolie Navarrate had four kills for CU.

Desiree Marmolejo had eight assists and Kendall Killchrist had seven while llibero Presley Shearin led the team with 11 digs. Freshman Jacee Stelter had a team-best three blocks with Taylor Hervey and Caitlyn Henderson each chipped in two in a slow night for the CU front row.

The Hilltoppers opened the first set with a 6-0 lead and never looked back, using multiple runs to win the set 25-9; the Aggies scored back-to-back one time in the frame.

CU kept the second set close early as a block by Stelter and Henderson got them within one (9-8). However, SEU answered with a 6-1 stretch and then closed out the frame with an 8-2 run to give them the 25-14 win.

The home team carried that momentum into the third, leading 15-4 and then 20-6. The Aggies used a couple of runs to get to 14 points, but the Hilltoppers scored two to copy their set two score to win the match in three.

The Aggies, who are now 1-24 overall and 0-13 in Lone Star Conference play, have just two more chances now to notch their first road win of the year. They face St. Mary's on Saturday at 2 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas.
