LAWTON – Led by All-Conference guard
Maighan Hedge, the Cameron women's basketball team is off to a hot start after beating UCCS for their second straight win to start the season.
Â
The Aggies cruised to 30-point win in their season opener against Adams State on Friday night and then 24-hours later took care of Colorado-Colorado Springs, 80-54, using stifling defense and a spread-out attack.Â
Â
Cameron forced 22 turnovers against Adams State and then on Saturday caused 33 against the Mountain Lions, resulting in 33 points. Of their 33 forced turnovers, 13 came on steals led by super-senior
Logan Collyer with four and Hedge and
Katie King with three each.
Â
Hedge and King also got it done on the offensive end for head coach
Emma Andrews. Hedge followed up her 26-point outing on a Friday with 29 Saturday on 10-16 shooting from the field. She made a trio of three-pointers, as did King, who finished with 17 points, and
Korie Allensworth, who added 11.
Â
Stephanie Peterson had a solid all-around game for the Black and Gold, putting up nine points and a team-best seven rebounds and six assists.Â
Â
Cameron seemed to be feeling the Mountain Lions out early, leading just 18-11 after a quarter of play after going 7-19 from the field and 4-9 from three. They then exploded in the second, scoring 31 points on 57.9 percent shooting to lead 49-26 at the break. Hedge and King both had 15 points through the first 20 minutes of action.Â
Â
The Aggies picked up the pressure to start the second half, forcing 11 turnovers in the third quarter alone. They also did a good job of getting to the line in the period, going 9-12 from the charity, eight of which came out of the hands of Hedge.Â
Â
A made jumper by King at the 2:15 mark in the third put CU up by 35 and that was a big-enough lead to cruised to the 26-point win despite shooting under 25 percent (3-14) from the floor in the final quarter.Â
Â
The now 2-0 Aggies are set up for a big matchup on Tuesday, Nov. 16, as they host rival Midwestern State, who also went 2-0 against the same opponents this past weekend. Scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in the Aggie Gym, the Red River showdown is a rematch of a Lone Star Conference Championship first-round meeting last spring.Â
